Goblin World / Re: Where to start with Goblin World
« on: June 19, 2020, 10:32:42 PM »
Goblin World (and Number Appearing) was written to question the assumption that ?monstrous races? were always evil or unplayable.

I want to continue to encourage players to put aside their assumptions and limits of what character they can play and to explore new horizons.

However, the language I used in writing Goblin World perpetuates racial stereotypes in a way that does not reflect my core beliefs.

I apologise if my work has offended anyone, or contributed in any way to creating or spreading prejudice.

As the author I have decided to remove this title until I have the time and capability to revise and make it what it needs to be. I may also remove the threads containing rules from this forum in future.

I am proud of the artists who contributed to this work. My decision is not intended to reflect on their artwork, or on the Dungeon World game.

If you have concerns, questions or comments, please reach out to me here or at @ Wightbred on Twitter.

Yes I am.

There are extensive discussions going on about race in roleplaying in the community right now in parallel to the Black Lives Matter movement, which has caused me to re-evaluate my old games from a new perspective.

Lots of great information about this on Twitter and other forums, and the discussions have lead to a response by Wizards of the Coast about the current version of Dungeons and Dragons: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/diversity-and-dnd

Thanks for your interest.

We had a lot of fun with this game back in the day, but I was not planning to continue to make it available.

The game design has a few fundamental problems:
- The language used perpetuates racial stereotypes in a way that does not reflect my core beliefs.
- The mechanics include a asymmetrical power mechanic that might be a trigger for some people.
- The game includes a sex mechanic that, whilst inclusive is scope, is potentially problematic.

These design problems do not reflect on the awesome artwork that others have done to support the game.

I also honestly thought no-one would be interested in this old design, and I haven?t played it for years, so I was thinking of mothballing this whole set of threads (except maybe the art).

Happy to have a DM discussion here or on Twitter (@ Wightbred) if you want.

Love the Crossbows!

Am I far too late to suggest a Bow (2-harm close slow) as a graceful weapon for a Skinner so we can have some Katniss / Mad Max 2 action?

Apocalypse World / Re: How Much to Prepare?

Sounds like it went really well, except you didn't get enough tension in the setup so you can have the Fronts you need to drive action. More questions to draw out "who do you hate/fear/love?" will give you that without any need for more prep. You are doing it right, but re-read "The 1st Session" again, and especially from "Look for where they are not in control".

By the end of our recent first session of a new AW campaign (with no MC) I am terrified of all the complications and implications for our characters because of the tension we came up with by pushing where we am not in control and leaving questions unanswered:
- radiation storms (what is out in the desert?)
- mutants below (what do they want?)
- sealed off areas (chances to find forgotten tech, or death traps?)
- rumours of high-tech cannibals above (or are they?)
- a gang trying to get in the hold (who is backing them?)
- little Timmy has a strange disease (what is it? why were those thugs talking about it?)
- internal politics x hardholder (why has he given up?) x lieutenants (what do they want?) x merchants (who will step up now their leader is dead? who started the fire?) x ...

Have fun!

I love the idea that this can be used without hotness.

"That unkempt old man is not really going to take of his disgusting socks in our clean house? I can't believe it, he's doing it! It's so horrible I can't look away!"

Never thought of taking this move from another playbook, but now I'm intrigued.

I like this. You can have whatever rank and holdings you want... but can you hold onto it?

My first thoughts...

So much to love here:
- XP makes you diversify without needing to mark stats.
- Ranks really give a dark ages feel.
- Go Aggro swapped around makes sense.
- Tone of Trolls is just right.
- Harm mechanic is genius.

@ watergoesred: Those rules could be pretty sweet for our dying gods campaign. Let's talk offline.

Icons are a very cool idea, and it seems pretty easy to hack. Are you thinking of writing it up in some more detail?

Yep. That's the interim one I did a few months ago.

Number Appearing is a supplement I wrote as a DW Kickstarter stretch goal that lets you play goblins, orcs, trolls, giants, werewolves, skeletons, liches, etc... It has cool art by Michael Wight, Ed Heil and Russ Nicholson and was developed with the advice and support of some pretty cool people like Marshall Miller and Stras Acimovic.

Enough time has passed since the Kickstarter so I've agreed with Sage Latorra that we'll release this to everyone.

Number Appearing was never intended to be the final word on these races, just a jumping off point so you can think about a nasty Last Breath alternative and see where that Lycanthrope bite takes you. I'm always interested in feedback and ideas... (especially if there is to be a second edition.)

Sorry to hear life got in the way, but thanks for posting these ideas. Hopefully someone will have a chance to pick this up and keep running with it.

Posted Number Appearing without art in this thread:

http://apocalypse-world.com/forums/index.php?topic=6021.0

The only reason there is a Death Knight in there is the awesome surprise art Russ Nicholson did for me, which inspired me to write up the rules. So it's a shame you can't see it yet.

I'm interested.

Did some work on this idea previously: http://apocalypse-world.com/forums/index.php?topic=1633.0
