Dungeon World / Re: Help! Gnomes! (feedback wanted on my first race for DW)
« on: December 26, 2012, 07:14:14 AM »
Hey Coronoides, great to see gnomes getting tackled! I think they're a race no one's tried converting before.

I'd try to avoid starting moves that just give a bonus to one action over another. I know there are quite a few like that in the book, but I don't find them particularly grabbing. For example, how about these?

Gnome Druid - Fellow Burrower
You may always take the shape of any burrowing animal, in addition to your normal options.

Gnome Thief - Mechanist
Since a young age you have been fascinated with mechanisms. When a trap features and intricate mechanism such as clockwork, hydraulics or pressure plates, and you use Trap Expert, increase your Hold by 1.

Gnome Wizard - Illuvination
Your people are adept at uncovering knowledge or obfusticating it. Every time you gain access to a new level of spells, you may choose one Divination or Illusion spell of that level and learn it automatically.

Hey folks,

Just a reminder that there's one more week to get your submissions in! We've got a good collection already but we could still use more.

Also, any suggestions on what we could call the zine? I've thought of:

  • World Magazine (riffing on Dungeon Magazine and Dragon Magazine, but pretty vague!
  • The Front (my current favourite)
  • Dungeon World Zine (straight and to the point)

Some people have blogs where they write about Dungeon World. Maybe some of their posts could be harvested? If they allow it of course.

Good idea! Which blogs would you recommend?

Dungeon World / Re: Using CC Attribution: a suggestion to homebrewers

I have been wondering, why the unported license instead of the share-alike, if I am sharing I actually want people to do the same, it is why the SRD worked so well for the hobby, it required your work to be shareable.

I'm a big fan of Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike, but I figured that since Adam and Sage chose CC Attribution for DW it made sense to encourage the same licence for the community.

CC Attribution and CC Attribution-ShareAlike do play nicely together though, so I don't think it would hurt for you to put something like this in your sig instead of what you have now:

All my posts (unless stated otherwise) are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/.

Hey folks,

Just wanted to let you know that I've also written a submissions guide if you were looking for ideas.

Hi folks,

I've given myself the holiday project of putting together a Dungeon World zine by the 21st of January. At this stage, I'm planning to keep it fairly modest: I'd be happy with something six or more pages long, laid out in LibreOffice, with a bit of public domain art to spice it up.

I'd really like to fill the zine with your contributions. One motivation for this project is that I feel like there's a lot of mostly-written to totally-done content that gets lost in the forums or the Google Plus group, and the zine could be an excuse to polish it up and preserve it for posterity. But you're also very welcome to submit never-seen-before stuff too.

I'd also like to make it totally Creative Commons Attribution (EDIT: or Attribution-ShareAlike) licensed. If that's a problem, I'm sorry, but it's not something I'm willing to compromise on at this stage.

Contributions
Please email all contributions to me at sanglorian AT gmail DOT com

Submissions will close on the 1st of January.

Written contributions
These don't have to be huge. A letter to the editor or a single custom move that you're happy with would be great. Longer entries are also welcome.

I'm happy to publish World of Dungeons content as well. WoD is not licensed under Creative Commons Attribution, so I'll approach John Harper and try to sort something out if we end up getting any WoD contributions.

You can put the contribution in the body of your email, or attach an ODT, RTF, DOC or DOCX file.

Illustrations
If you'd be keen to illustrate an article, please get in touch. You could also provide an existing illustration and ask someone to write an article to accompany it.

Advertisements
I'll publish, for free, advertisements for a DW product if the product is entirely Creative Commons Attribution licensed.

Joining the Editorial Board
If you'd like to look over the contributions and give advice to the authors, please get in touch with me. I think this could be really useful, if experienced monster creators and compendium class creators and so on could give feedback to contributors. I don't feel like I have enough experience with DW myself to give advice.

If you have any comments or feedback, please get in touch!

Dungeon World / Re: The Druid and the "Shapeshifter" starting move
« on: December 13, 2012, 07:59:36 AM »
Hey Undreren,

You're definitely not alone here. I also struggled with the Shapeshifter move in the last game that I ran, so I'm looking forward to reading the responses that you get here.

I didn't have any doubts about not letting them claim armour from shields, however. It goes back to the whole 'to do it, do it' philosophy of the * World games. You use a shield to protect yourself. If you can't use it, you don't get the benefit.

I find that really creepy. Stuff you publish, fine, but otherwise it seems you're trying to impose an unnecessary legal framework on casual communication.

Hey Slow Dog, thanks for responding.

The unnecessary legal framework is the global copyright regime, which applies automatically to all casual communication on the net. What the Creative Commons licences do is reduce copyright limitations to make it easier to engage in casual communications.

But what I anticipate happening is people adding the 'Put this in your posts' snippet to the posts they make with game content. Stuff that could be published, whether or not it currently is.

Since someone had concerns about me selling The Artificer, I am still keeping the playbook available for free here: http://apocalypse-world.com/forums/index.php?topic=3056.15

I recognize the class was a community collaboration, and I am not attempting to take sole credit for it. theloneamigo definitely had a large part in the class's formation. It's included in the packet as a nice thank you bonus for anyone taking a dive on my random no-name creation.

Thanks for clearing that up. It's situations like these that make me think that the DW community should get in the habit of applying the Creative Commons Attribution licence to everything we create (where possible). That way, we know exactly what we can and can't do with other people's contributions. I've written up my thoughts on this =http://apocalypse-world.com/forums/index.php?topic=5907.new%3bspam=true#newhere.

Dungeon World / Using CC Attribution: a suggestion to homebrewers
« on: December 04, 2012, 07:16:51 AM »
Hi folks,

I'm a big fan of Dungeon World, and I'm also a big fan of open gaming. I was delighted when Sage and Adam licensed DW under Creative Commons Attribution.

I'd love to see the community use the Creative Commons Attribution licence as much as possible as well. I've put my own (small) contribution under it. The Take on Rules products (Establishments and Magic Items) and the Number Appearing backer supplement both use that licence as well.

The advantages of CC BY are:
  • It creates a culture of sharing where everyone can build on the contributions of others.
  • It fits so well with how homebrewing works: you take someone's rules, tweak them, rework them, add to them, and then share the result.
  • It makes the legal situation very clear for people, making them more likely to engage with your stuff.
  • It makes archiving possible. If these forums go down, there's no legal way for someone to store the material that people have created.
  • It encourages small press, which is how the roleplaying community has to operate.
  • It recognises the generosity of Adam and Sage in opening their game, and allows them to use the stuff we make, if they think it's worth it.

I'd love to discuss using CC Attribution further with people if you have any questions or concerns. I also thought I'd share these little snippets of text that you can use to license your work CC BY.

Hey gnome7,

The free classes look cool. Could you please tell me which race options are available for the Priest and the Templar so I can add them to the DW index?

Also, I noticed that the Artificer looks quite similar to the class by theloneamigo. Did you collaborate with him on it?

It's exclusive to members of the Adventurer's Guild, which isn't too tricky to join.

I'm hoping that, since DW has been released, they'll update the stuff they have in the Adventurer's Guild - or even better, licence it under Creative Commons Attribution so others can update it and play around with it.

Very cool!

Can you explain your intention around, for example, the Gear listings? I see "Things (Blackmoore)". Is that it, or were you thinking of listing all the Things individually under this Gear heading?

I probably won't get around to listing all those things, but I'd be very happy for someone else to do it!

I mean, vampires only have 10 HP and 2 armor, which seems to make them more fragile than a typical first-level cleric.

I share some of your concerns about HP, but I just thought I should say: there is no typical first-level cleric. There is the Cleric, the only cleric in the world, who may at that point be only first level.

Cerisa, I thought was was a great post. Although I do think it's a little different in a team game. It's one thing for two people to face off against the Witch-King and kill him in two blows, and another for a party of five to do the same.
