Swell Maps of Hell
« on: November 28, 2010, 11:36:42 PM »
I thought it might be nice to have a thread to share some of the maps we make for Apocalypse World.  I'm going to use the clickable thumbnail option with photobucket so I don't screw up the forum with big JPEGs.

I'll start with two maps I made for my "A Town Called Gaga" game:

This is the map of postapocalyptic Arizona.  I think it came out pretty well.

This is the butt-ugly map I made with Microsoft Paint to represent the town itself.

And this is the detoured map Madu made for an online game I'm in, posted here with his permission.

Again, click on the images to see full sized versions, post your own in this thread!

I'll toss out links to the updated maps for said game, above:

Overview map 1.1: www.unflinching.org/images/map_1_1.jpg

Barnum's Block: www.unflinching.org/images/block_155.jpg

For those with interest, these are Sanborn fire maps of San Francisco, ca. 1890 grunged up and "annotated" in Photoshop.  For pure random urban streetgrid goodness those maps are fantastic -- copious and free out there in Internetland.

The writing on those is both brilliant and hilarious.
A player of mine playing a gunlugger - "So now that I took infinite knives, I'm setting up a knife store." Me - "....what?" Him - "Yeah, I figure with no overhead, I'm gonna make a pretty nice profit." Me - "......"

So far the caravan has been traveling back and forth between the towns between Marlboro City and Junk Haven.

Dang, that is SWEET.  I love the shaded relief, not to mention the town names.  What'd that get made with?

The base image was a public-domain map of the U.S. from ShadedRelief.com (http://www.shadedrelief.com/physical/pages/download.html)

The hexes are from the Judge's Guild site (IIRC, I had to pare the sheet down a bit to make it manageable in size.) (http://www.judgesguild.org/downloads/index.html I think?)

Everything else was done in Photoshop.  I cropped the US map to just the south-west, rotated and flipped things till I didn't recognize them any more, removed the Great Salt Lake, made everything a little bit redder, then combined it with the hex sheet and started brainstorming names.  The format for the words and so forth was all based on the other maps at the shaded relief site, using Consolas, the font from the AW rulebook. ( The font for the Apocalypse World logo I found browsing around the forums (VTKS Good Luck For You - http://www.dafont.com/vtks-good-luck-for-you.font).

Here's another map from the same campaign:

For a while I was also making topographical maps of the hexes when the characters visited them, but that proved to be more time-consuming than it was worth, since they've mostly stuck to the cities and haven't ventured off into the wild at all.  They came in handy for charting a couple fights on the roads, though.
