brainstorming & development / Re: Amber: Game mastering and threats
« on: August 05, 2011, 05:44:59 PM »
"Make the shadows seem real" is basically directly counter to "Shadow is transient."

I suggest: "Make Amber seem real, make Chaos seem capricious, make Shadow seem artificial." For every Shadow that does seem real, there are unlimited others that both don't and are more useful because they don't.

Hmm. That's weird. The wording of DD is exactly the same as AUF but its Move in Detail text is like....totally dissimilar. Ludanto, I see your point about what the book says; nonetheless I'm uneasy with that usage. I feel like the bit where it says, "Defy Danger is for those times when it seems like you clearly should be rolling, but no other move applies." is the critical piece of text. If there is another move, DD does not apply. In the situation Kevin describes, it seems like Defend is clearly applicable, so DD is not.

I don't think that's the way Defy Danger works. The results are specifically telling you how successfully you do the thing you're trying. They don't really tell you anything about the risk you're up against.

It's like, "Hey Nekhbet, the scorpion-men are stabbing you with their vicious hooked swords and poison stingers. Their leader is asking you questions about where you hid the treasure."

Nekhbet: "Okay I'm gonna Defy Danger and cast Jigsaw Organ Condition on the leader so his lungs fall out and he dies of suffocation." *rolls* "11!"

MC: "Cool, so, you manage to gasp out the words of the Jigsaw Organ Condition just as one of the scorpion-men thrusts a stinger down your throat, and the last thing you hear as you black out is the distinctive squelch of falling lung tissue."

I thought this was a pretty cut-and-dried case.

(in the text I have) Defy Danger says "act despite an imminent threat." It's precisely act under fire. You're trying to do a thing, while you're endangered, and in doing so you open yourself to danger. Its weak hit and miss make this quite clear.

Defend meanwhile is clearly when you act in mitigation of a threat. Again, its hit options make this clear.

If you're in danger and trying to get shit done, you defy it! If you're in danger and you don't want to get hurt, defend yourself!

I don't know if you and Elizabeth are in the same game, but she pretty clearly described it as "Easy Mode". I was just addressing the content of her post, where she said that if someone ran a hold without the move, no one was idle or sick or etc. Even her language of referring to it as the "scarcity roll" rather than the "wealth roll" was somewhat indicative of a particular mindset about the move.
Yeah, P and E and I are all talking about the same game.

She's just trolling me(:

Here is my Hx Worksheet:

http://thor.divnull.com/pub/aw/hx-worksheet.pdf

Each character gets one Hx Worksheet, and you need the Hx instructions that each playbook has, since there is not space to duplicate that stuff here. Once you have calculated final Hx values you can transfer them to the playbooks of your choice.

Apocalypse World / Play Aids Index
« on: August 01, 2011, 03:27:07 PM »
Hey, so, since the AW book is sort of sparse in terms of useful play aids, I thought it'd be nice to offer a place on the forum for fan-created aids, sheets, and stuff.

Rules for this thread:

- Only post items for unhacked Apocalypse World. If you have new playbooks, post them somewhere else! Your maps, post them somewhere else! We only want stuff that has wide vanilla accessibility here.

- Label your links. Don't just toss up a filename and hope that we know what you mean by it.

- Say how to use your thing!

Suggestions for play aids:

- Use fonts that coordinate with the book. See Johnstone's (abridged) tips and my notes below:

The distressed fonts are VTKS Good Luck For You (S: for covers and titles) and Crust Clean (S: for text headings). Crust Clean doesn't come with punctuation, so Vincent used Dirty Ego for that. All three are available for free at dafont.com.

Consolas is the playbook body text, and Verdana Bold is used for the R Rating and the footers and numbering. Those are both standard fonts that your should have already, or you can get them from the MS website.

The body text in the rulebook is Chaparral Pro, an Adobe font. I believe it comes bundled with certain Adobe programs, but maybe somebody can suggest a free font that is at least passably similar. (S: Consolas is hella ugly and monospaced fonts are completely illegible so you should just use Chaparral for everything)

- It's considerate to use A4 or letter format (8.5in x 11in, for you Europeans) for your sheets so people don't need to buy special paper to use them. (Hey Vincent when do we get decent letter-formatted playbooks?)

- It's smart to label your sheets so it's evident what they're for even if it's not fully clear how they do it.

- PLAYTEST YOUR SHEETS!
I can't stress this enough. Seriously. Make sure you find a couple of people with different handwriting and don't all be architects or something and see if you have left enough space to write stuff down. See if you're forced to reference outside your sheets for things that should be on them. See what's on your sheets that you don't need or care about! Try different approaches before you post something, make sure it's real good.

For my part it's the 'person who feels like it's their responsibility and right to keep shit together' that is the identifying characteristic of the hardholder, not their competence to do so.

Certainly Saffron's rave has shit that is always breaking down, half of her security bike gang doesn't actually have wheels, etc., but Saffron doesn't really give a crap about that because her job is not any of these:

- make sure that people have shit to eat*
- make sure people have shit to sleep on*
- make sure people have a place to shit*

It is only precisely to:

- Throw a good party, regularly and without incident

which is hard enough on its own. If that means I gotta poison one of my security guys using the poisoned greywine my maybe-girlfriend's wife gave me, then that's what I'm gonna do, because that dude's expendable, but if I can sell his bike for drugs, then it serves the party.

*: It is also these particular class of 'household needs' that makes hardholding feel like LHOTP to me

based on a game i've played with a hold and one without

the hold is no good

it's just a lot of little house on the prairie homework business that don't really get across the whole 'life here in AW is cheap and terrible' vibe because everything is too safe.

I don't know why you would want barter. Fingers in Every Pie is just better than having to barter for stuff.

Apocalypse World / Hx Worksheet to make our lives easier
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:36:11 PM »
So, I'm playing an AW game with Elizabeth, Dev, Josh, our two friends Chris and Chris, Liam, and his fiancee Sarah. A good half of us have extensive AW experience.

Yet...

Hx was a total nightmare for us. It's completely confusing as it's written on the playbooks, and frankly I think there's a better way to handle/enumerate/instruct the procedures that help you arrive at a final value.

So I made a worksheet to make it easier.
