Monsterhearts / Re: Cool ideas!!!
« on: October 25, 2012, 09:56:27 AM »
I'll start:
My Queen, who'd gone through a lot of bad shit, mostly self inflicted, wanted something supernatural about her character, and as she had more than enough xp (we judged, we never really keep track).
She chose a move from the Infernal skin, Soul Debt and the bargain Strings attached.
Now, since the character had no idea the supernatural existed, we had to sort of ease her into it, and find out what form her contact with the infernal entity would take, and also what initial bargains she might have made. Trouble was, we risked having to retcon, because we figured she had to have made at least one bargain before without knowing it.

This was the solution: Her diary, an old leatherbound book she'd been writing in since she was ten (and had strangely never run out of blank pages(), was the connection.
Her first wish: "I just want to be popular". And of course, she was. Everyone wanted to be around her. The hottest guy in school asked her out. She had her gaggle of cheerleaders. She had followers. She had admirers. She had no friends.

The second wish was where she discovered that all was not right in the world.
She'd just had a fight with her father (we'd never met her mother, but assumed she was doing trophy-wife stuff such as shopping and rehab), who ended up grounding her like a child. Off to the diary, where she wrote "I wish he'd just go away on one his stupid business trips and never come back!!!" And the diary said, in flowing script, "DONE!!!"
And off her father went to the airport. Hours passed, and the police knocked on the door and informed her of his sad demise. Death by bus.

Monsterhearts / Cool ideas!!!

Hey everyone.
I just wanted to create a thread where, instead of asking questions, people could share random cool ideas used (or imagined used) in Monsterhearts.

Thanks for the reply, Joe.
I think I may have been a bit unclear, though. Our setup goes swimmingly, fast and fun. We enjoy setting up social disasters. Allison is always dead (I loved the "What's eating Allison" writeup, so as an homage we always start with an empty seat where Allison used to sit).
My problem really is framing the first scene. Possibly the last one as well, but we're only three sessions into the longest running of my three Monsterhearts campaigns.

I'd love to start with a BANG!!! I think I may just be too cautious and wanting to feel out my players a bit. This is strange to me, bgecause I run a helluva lot of games for strangers at Fastaval written by someone else, and there I have no problem throwing people into the deep end of the emotional pool.

Maybe the problem is that I don't really have the characters' personalities down yet, I can't yet feel what might affect them. Also, we establish their backstories such as family, after school job and such, in play.

All that being said, it's amazing after the first hour or two of actual play as we get a feel for oneanother. I just want to wow them from the word "Go!".

Monsterhearts / Slow beginnings

Hey everyone.
I have a bit of a problem starting sessions of Monsterhearts. It's not that we don't have a lot of fun, because we definately do, but starting a new game seems slow.
I don't mean the initial setup, selecting skins, asking questions, creating the town and such, that's quick and greatly enjoyable.
I'm talking about what happens after that.
How do I, as GM, start out sprinting? I mean, I have a threat planned (loosely), but I tend to start the group in the classroom and then... I freeze. I simply have no good way of getting the ball rolling.
I think maybe I'm scared of starting out too strong and scaring people off.
What I'd really like to know is: How do you guys do it? How do you start out?

I like your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter :-)

But seriously, these are great. I especially like the one with the reality show.

Monsterhearts / Illustrations of basic moves in the media
« on: September 12, 2012, 03:42:33 AM »
Thanks to my 20-month old daughter's sudden love for music videos (thank you, youtube), I've actually seen a few. Yes, few. Again, and again, and again....
Anywho, her recent obsession is Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend", and as I was watching it for the 39th time yesterday it struck me that it serves a an amazingly good example of the "Shut someone down" move, including how hurting someone can be a "Shut someone down" instead of "Lashing out physically".

There is, of course, also a bit of "Turn someone on" and possibly "Manipulate an NPC".

Do any of you have any other good examples of basic moves?

Monsterhearts / Re: A question regarding combat

That was actually my thought as well, but I appreciate you spelling it out for me.
In this instance we had a Chosen and a Fairie trying to save the Fairie's sister from being sacrificed by evil cultists (aren't all cultists in games evil by definition?). I had our Chosen roll once for each cultist, whereas our fey failed his rolls abominably and ended up on the floor, protecting himself from kicks. It's pretty hard to stab someone lying on the floor, after all.

Virgin rescued, head cultist (who turned out to be Richie from Homeroom) losing his hand (and a minute later his life).

Good thing this took place in the boiler room. Furnaces make handy corpse disposal units.

Monsterhearts / A question regarding combat
« on: August 08, 2012, 06:49:16 AM »
Hey everyone.
It may be in the book, but I seem to be unable to find the rules for combat against multiple opponents. When the situation arose, I had my player make a "Lashing out" roll against every opponent, but would it be more beneficial to make a single roll for the entire battle?

Oh, and turn it into a novel, please. I'd pay $8.99 on amazon to read it, even just for the extended dialogue.

« on: June 25, 2012, 07:54:22 AM »
Just a quick note: If you want to read more about succubi and deals with the devil, try Succubus Blues (published as Succubus on top in the US) by Richelle mead. The entire series is pretty good, and mainly deals with a succubus trying to deal with her job of corrupting people through sex, her day job in a bookstore and her relationship with a mortal. That relationship can never be consumated. They can't even kiss, because if they do, she'll be sucking out his lifeforce because he's so pure.
The series also deals with her relationships with her other immortal friends.

All in all a pretty good read, and very inspiring for an MC.

As the title states, this is a bit selfish. I was wondering if anyone had done a 1920*1080 desktop wallpaper of the Monsterhearts cover? I really love the picture!
