Goblin World / Re: AP: Sneaking up to Backstab...
« on: June 05, 2011, 10:37:35 PM »
For me, this session really brought out the importance of "the master" to each class.  Playing an extortionist meant that being the master was not very important to me in a gaming sense but, thinking like a goblin, I kept trying to be it anyway.

Combat was fast and furious with risk being carefully but easily considered prior to each move.  I really love the options for reducing damage, which gave even the thief an incentive to keep "the master" status just in case things got hairy.  Of course having an orc become brain-damaged was awesome too and made the fights feel really brutal.

Of course being a clever extortionist meant that I was well out of harms way, and kept using my silver tongue to get others to do things for me.

Goblin world is making me a bit concerned about my own morality though, as I do find it all too easy to slip on the skin of a conniving backstabbing little mongrel.

I finally finished the first batch of the career types for Goblin World.

here they all collected together, a pack of nasty little buggers.

Goblin Sorcerer

Goblin Shaman

Goblin Skirmisher

Orc Marauder

Goblin Raider

Goblin Extortionist

Goblin Thief

Guess the next step is to update the playbooks!

Goblin World / Re: Art and Inspiration

So I'm working on a batch of art to populate the playbooks (I did the cover for the current GW rules hacks) and I was writing out a bunch of short descriptors for what a goblin is.

As my interest doesn't go much beyond the goblin (say to orcs for example) I'd appreciate some help on the other types.

Feel free to add to the goblin list as well, these things help me get the feel right :)

Goblins are:
  • Small
  • Weak
  • Cowards
  • Liars
  • Sneaky
  • Murderous
  • Quick
  • Cunning, but not smart
  • Selfish
  • Out for number 1
  • Know their place, and it isn't the top
  • Big nosed
  • Big eared
  • Toadies, unless the boss isn't watching
  • Dishonest
  • Evil?

I put a ? after evil because I honestly don't know if they are.  Sure all the attributes I've got up there now are definitely not ones you'd want to see in someone you're going camping with, but I reckon these things are adaptations that a creature nowhere near the top of their food chain has had to make.

Now Orcs are...

Played this last night w/ Wightbred as MC and it was so much fun it was ridiculous.  The Master/Toad mechanic in particular really nails the goblinoid society (well the way I saw it anyway).

I'm now inspired for the artwork Wightbred so I'll get doodling.

Totally agree; this brings it closer to the D&D feel (particularly the tactical part) but still doesn't divorce me from my character to a full tactical miniatures game.

This is great stuff - I like the idea of Ravenloft as well!

Dungeon World / Re: Removing the last unnecessary escalation?

I really like this idea; the needless escalation of D&D always frustrated me and I just assumed it was due to my background of games like SR where HP didn't exist.

I don't see any problems with your proposed fix to this and think DW would really sing with this.

There appears to be a real elegance to this; the longevity of items would increase and the drop frequency could decrease - it removes quite nicely the reliance on magic weapons and armour.

Good Work!
