Apocalypse World / Re: hold 1+1

True, but the conventions are consistent. Once you internalise what it means (which does take more than a skim), it's very precise and concise language. I actually have the opposite experience as you: when I see that stuff, I go "oh good, I know exactly what that means".

(And sometimes that "exactly what it means" includes "I now know to look up detail X in the move".)

Apocalypse World / Re: Organizing NPCs

This doesn't actually solve the problem in my game.  The Savvyhead Lemieux altered a CB radio to allow him to speak to the dead. The consequences of this were so disturbing (the dead now speak on all the CB radios, mostly screaming for help, crying, and curses) that Lemieux changed playbooks to a Battlebabe. So keeping track of the body count is also part of my concern.

Make your crosshairs nastier. Start re-killing the dead. That should scare the crap out of any weird-sensitive PCs and possibly give you the start of a new Front should you need one.

Apocalypse World / Re: [n00b] Does the MC roll dice?

Yeah. If only to help get into the proper MC mindset where moves are the only thing you do, and you only do moves in response to specific things, it might be a good idea to stick with the players making the harm move for the first bunch of sessions.

Apocalypse World / Re: sell me on weird

I actually see the social dysfunction and weird powers as separate things arising from the same source: It's Apocalypse World. There is no status quo. Everything and everyone is broken, from the people to the world.

Social dysfunction doesn't give anyone superpowers, nor do the superpowers make people dysfunctional. The fact that the ground and air is poisoned, the food is dangerous and scarce, the sun is broken in the sky, the minds of the dead are eating the minds of the survivors, water is as likely to hydrate as it is to infect with puppet-string parasites… those are why people are dysfunctional.

Those are also why some of those dysfunctional people happen to be able to do some weird shit.

So the question, given that pile of badness, is: What do you do?

Resist the temptation!

If they've managed to set themselves up so that they're acting as a united front, let them enjoy it while it lasts, but don't mechanically reinforce it. Helping them form and sustain a "party" goes against 2/3s of the MC's agenda: "Play to find out what happens", and "Make the PCs' lives not boring". ("Do they hold it together, or give in to constant temptations to fuck each other over?")

Let them, but not simultaneously. If you run out of meaningful answers, sucks to be the last guy who's risking a miss for nothing!

Also, remember that the PCs aren't always going to be working together. Work their different goals and needs to make sure they're at odds. Then, you really will have different things to tell them when they hit a read roll.

Because then you're not The Brainer, your The Driver or The Angel or whatever. It's not just about mechanics.

Besides, on the mechanical side, you can't roll+sharp instead of weird for anything except opening your brain with Sixth Sense/Weather Eye, so that subtle Brainer design would still be the master of every other weird circumstance.

… a long-term paper storage facility for companies.  Anywhere that words go to die.

Oh yeah. This. Tunnels and flickering lights and paper demons and the evil secrets they keep.

Now I want to play a game set in the middle of a ruined business district, all broken skyscrapers and rotting public works, with a Grotesque Front called The Paperwork Vortex.

I've got a template already, so depends on numbers and the toddler interference wildcard. Much faster without a hand-crafted image too.

Hah. And I could lay them out and proof them. But possibly not in Norwegian.

Apocalypse World / Re: Angels infirmary
« on: August 22, 2010, 03:39:51 PM »
I'm going to disagree. I think an infirmary is just an infirmary. It's something you get in the fiction, with all the inherent benefits and drawbacks of having a thing in the fiction brings. It's a place to keep your stuff, treat people in a secure place, it's got a door you can bar, you can sleep there, etc.

Yeah. Just being in a battle doesn't mean the only option is Seize by Force. It depends on what you're doing in the battle.

To my mind, using weird is hooking into the same thing(s) that make(s) the psychic maelstrom even possible. How do you feel about the maelstrom, given your misgivings about weird?

I took my own advice and cobbled together a Faceless playbook from the material here on the forums, using Scribus, some font sleuthing, and Vincent's AW art technique applied to a Creative Commons pic of Cory Doctorow in a funky mask. Picture proof: http://twitpic.com/2gmea5

It was a lot of fun to make, and looks good! Having made one, I'm desperately trying to think of new archetypes that I find compelling just so I can make more. It's ridiculously satisfying to create something, even if it's a bootleg. :)

(Sorry, I'm not going to share the print file. Doing this for personal use is one thing, but I'm not going to distribute and stomp on several feet's worth of toes. However: I am almost completely unskilled at desktop publishing, so I'm proof anyone can do it with a bit of work…)
