Traps
« on: July 14, 2012, 03:23:27 PM »
I would love to see people's take on traps. This one was done for a log trap in the Hidden Shrine which logs, suspended by ropes/chains would swing out and mash people. The way this is written, could also basically be used for a pit trap, or even an avalanche.

Danger: Log Trap
Defy Danger - Dex
7-9 Pick 1, Failure - Pick 3
  • Character is pinned against Wall
  • Character takes 1d8, Only plate mail and shields subtract damage
  • Character takes an impairment
  • An important item is broken

This is a drowning "trap", like wading in murky water than stepping off shelf. If the player gets a partial success they take one from the list and then are able to get back to safety. Failure means either dropping encumbering items, or taking drowning damage until they are able to get back to safety.

Danger: Drowning
Defy Danger
7-9 Pick 1. Failure take 1d6 (no armor) and pick one item below, and re-roll
  • Drop Armor
  • Drop Weapons
  • Drop backpack or Significant Item
  • Take 1d6 - No armor

This trap fills the room with sand and if the characters do not get out in time, they will suffocate.

Danger: Sand Trap
Impending Doom
  • One Foot Deep - Hard to move around - Dex Roll or Fall
  • Knee Deep -
  • Waist deep - Save vs Str to keep from being entrapped.
  • Chest Deep - Save vs. Strength - keep from entrapped - cannot untrap oneself.
  • Head deep - Suffocation starts.
  • Dead

These are really handy, I wouldn't mind seeing just a page of sample traps.

The hourglass trap would be the most awesome, if you could manage to get one or more characters in the bottom bulb to open the trap door, while one or more characters are fighting in the top bulb.  No one would be happy!

Grimtooth is a genuis, its true.

I really like giving players diagrams and letting them figure out how the trap works. When they ask a question relating to the trap I can often say, Hmmm, sounds like you are discerning the reality of the trap yes? Woe betide you on a miss.
