Monster of the Week / Hunters and Sex
« on: November 07, 2012, 06:48:42 AM »
So, there's no specials in MotW.

And here I am, watching Supernatural for the umpteen time, and there's lots of sex. I mean, capital-l Lots. And it's relevant, too. Dean Winchester definitely classify for "get +1 and if you want, give +1 to your partner" special, or maybe the "it's not like it means anything" special. Sammy get his freak on less often, but it's still a couple time a season, and it counts likewise.

I started to think about the other source materials. Buffy ? A lot of people get some, and it's relevant. Angel ? Well, having (or not having) sex is actually a big deal for the titular character, and others get plot-relevant sex couple times a season too. X-Files is less sexually gratifying for their heroes, but damn, Fringe has a relevant sex scene in the first half of the first episode.

So, why not ?

blood & guts / Re: how the stats balance
« on: November 06, 2012, 06:58:39 AM »
I'd love to hear why some playbooks get 2 moves and some get 3. In some cases, I can see various other factors accounting for "balance", but in others I can't (e.g. the Skinner). Will you still speak about this sometime? Or have you already?

I'm not Vincent, but the Skinner's special is crazy powerful, and their hot+2 base makes it a reliable tool.

Also, I'd like to apologize for the autocorrect software of my ipod who went crazy in the first post, and now I can't edit it :(

And then John was a zombie I think I got it. Not like "Vincent put a joke in there" got it, more like "if you tilt your head and squint a litte" got it.

Opening your brain to the psychic maelstrom is really the character getting a direct line to you, the MC.

So next time I'm MCing I'm go try this: whenever a character opens their brain to the psychic maelstrom, I'm just gonna be me. Take a step back, casually review the situation like I'm watching a TV show and tell them whatever I feel about it, how I can direct this better. Like "yeah, don't you think it's a little boring all this? I think storming someone all guns blazing, gang and all, is a great idea." And when they blow it, I'm gonna judge them as I would some character in a show and give them what I think they deserve. Mean is good, of course, 6- and all, but not necessarily. "Yeah, Uncle is a dick, always picking on the weaker and all. A fucking bully. I'm going to show him how it feel to be bullied upon, should teach'im a lesson or three."

So? Am I onto something? Is it so obvious how come I didn't get it before? Or is it so far-fetched it's like "the death star is real an ovum and the starfighters are spematozoids"? A good idea? A boring one? A stupid one? Or what?

Apocalypse World / Re: How would you handle Shields?
« on: October 16, 2012, 09:54:30 AM »
I'd give it +1armour like the transportable cover it is. Maybe I'd add a clumsy tag I could activate as a move if I'm feeling procedural.

I really can't tell, sorry. That was the publisher's job to negociate things like this. I think you might want to get in touch with Narrattiva, the italian publisher who translated AW and Dogs.

Thanks! Translating it and thus reading it again and again (and again) made me appreciate the game even more. It's a real good, solid piece of design.

Oh! Where will I be able to get this? I'm also a French translator and would really, really dig seeing the final result.

La Boîte à Heuhh's publishing it. You can find more info here : http://www.bah-editions.fr/pages/apocalypse-world-6685272.html

Apocalypse World / Re: Gangs for Battlebabes
« on: October 09, 2012, 02:32:36 AM »
Well, by the book, ice cold is for going aggro, full stop. Stat swapping moves explicitely say for which basic moves you can do it, it's not "use cool instead of hard whenever it's convenient". Expect your battlebabe to suck at leadership — hard is their dumpstat.

(I feel it's kind of the point. Battlebabes are free and unburdened but don't handle responsabilities well, stick them a gang and things go sour — unless they get their shit together about that, maybe by changing playbook.)

Now, you can micromanage your gang. Manipulate them, go aggro on them, seduce them, talk them into it, whatever. Leadership and pack alpha gives you, say, macros you can use some times (when your gang fights for you, when they as a whole don't do what you want) and they make things easy for hard people, but you can manage without.

It was. It was also a great experience. I translated a few technical manuals and telemarketing scripts before (don't judge me), but it was my first, say, litterary translation. It was crazy fun though! I can't wait to hold that damn book in my hands.

(But seriously, the idiosyncrasies were the lesser of my worries. The bakerisms and strange ideas, on the other hand... Did you native speakers get that Tum-tum was a collective consciousness with many bodies in the examples pp. 189-214?)

...is go.

The beast of a PDF is now in the hands of the printers and all. I've handled both the translation and the lay out ; it's been six, seven months of work and a hell of a ride.

Oh, and Vincent? Let me join the italian team and from the bottom of my heart, fuck you.

brainstorming & development / Re: Aeon World : Cthulhutech hack anyone ?
« on: September 21, 2012, 03:57:22 AM »
Thanks! Oh, and by all means, make it yours and post your results! I put that hack together because I was super-bored and I'm not sure it work, but if it does, or spectacularly doesn't but you somehow make it work, or if you add anything, please share!

I still have the INND templates if you want to do your own playbooks.

Hi. Thanks!

No, not anytime soon, I'm affraid. I'm crazy busy right now — I'm busy polishing the french versions of Apocalypse World and Dungeon World plus trying to earn real money and all. And after that, I've got some other game-related things coming up I'd rather focus on. One of these things being a *World-derived post-cyber game based on a Jenna Moran setting (think ghost in the shell, mostly) but I'm still figuring out how to publish that thing. I'll try to release a beta in a few months, maybe around november, but shh.

Monster of the Week / Re: Dumb Question -- Initiative???
« on: September 14, 2012, 06:01:23 AM »
On the topic of initiative and spolight-sharing (initiative being all about that, in a way), here's a fun thing to do I tried last session(I think it's in the book, but I'm not certain):

You know when a player blows a roll, you're supposed to do a keeper move, right? Don't always inflict it to the PC whose player blowed the roll.

Instead, spring from the fiction and misdirect so what's you're telling comes from the blowed roll, sure, but inflict it on another PC (or a few of them) and ask them what's it they're doing.

That way you're passing the spotlight around in accord with the fiction. Works like a charm.
