Apocalypse World / cliffhanger and between session moves?

We ended one session with a cliffhanger. The seriously hurt characters are hiding in a dark barn, and something smashes the door open and enters with a roar. END OF SESSION

Now. The characters are an operator and a hardholder.

Would you in the beginning of next session make them roll Moonlighting and Wealth, or would you skip it?

Neither the Hold nor the crew is nearby.

I have been working on a CoC-AW hack called Lovecraft world. The aim is to be able to play AW with my CoC-loving friends. So far we have played two sessions and it seems to work. But I could really use some input.

My plan was to change as little as possible from the original AW.

It is not trying to be Call of Chtulhu or even a game that tries to mimic Lovecraft´s stories. It´s a horror mystery game with a touch of pulp.

Would be glad to get any kind of feedback.

I´m working on a hack called Lovacraft World and I´m thinking about different things you can read.

I have started to work on a Read Information Move and a Read Crime scene move.

(Also thinking about a Read Move that criminals can do to plan a bank robbery- but that´s a different story)

Are these kind of Readings too abstract for AW or why arn´t there already these kinds of readings?

When you search the libraries and books looking for information about a person or a group, or something scary or strange: Roll ... Sharp?

  • What is it´s the true past?
  • What secrets does this it seem to hide?
  • What is it´s true name?
  • Which other grups/ persons/ places have connections to it?
  • How can I reach/ find it?
  • What seems to be the most disturbing/ dangerous about it?

Read crimescene
When you investigate a crime scene looking for clues roll Sharp(?)

I´m also thinking about a version of Open your head that let´s the Investigator see horrors and possible read and understand horrors, and also read scary books and cast spells.

I´m preparing for third session now and working on some background material and how to make cool situations and Fires with it.

This I know.

Karlsborg is placed on a thin hole between this world and the grim feary world where everything is magical and possible and everyone is a slave. Mikael (PC) is a fae and also adopted into his family. He doesn´t know that he is a fae. He escaped from fae-world with his sister- the key-girl. Mikael was just a slave and a nobody but his sister is The One. When she awakens in our world the bridge between the two worlds opens and whoever controls her and the hole will control the new world here, with magic and endless power.

When Mikael passed through the worlds he lost his memories. His sister also did that, but she as well turned into a hungry beast, a great wolf which kills people in the woods.

Now three different forces fight to find the keygirl and contorl her and the hole. But the don´t know what happened to her.

Madeleine is the shool counseler. She is also some kind of cat-fae. Her home is school and she wants to turn school into her own magical territory. Mikael was her slave, and she knows who he was. She wants him. Madeleine controls Mikaels friend Maria who loves Mikael. Madeleine also controls the teacher Fredrik who gets magic from her to do something (what does he whant...?) Madeleine controls lust.

The Calmer is Madeleines husband. He is a magical fae who also has crossed the border into our realm. He controls death and destruction. His home is at the old castle where he collects young people. He has control over Mikaels younger brother. And for some reason he want´s Mikaels brother to collect Alma, Johans (the witch) kid sister. The Calmer gave power to Kent, the father of the Ghoul Vilgot to make ghouls and rise people from the grave. Vilgot doesn´t know that his father sold his own soul to give Vilgot life.

Bosse is a human being and a witch. he also owns real estate in town, like the club for youngsters, Backside. Bosse has contact with the parent of the Witch Johan- who are brokers- and hypnotzed them to quit their job and just work for him to buy houses where his magic says the hole will open. Bosse has got some kind of coven. He wants the keygirl as well. He knows about Johans powers since Johan put a hex on Bosses son Patte and made Patte see demons (last thing that happend last session).

Other people and stuff:

Johans (the witch) younger 12-year old sister has had a love affair with Bosses other son 16-year old Krille, who made love with her. This made Johan mad so he hit Krille in school, hospitalized him. Johans parent are mad about this cause they believe they could loose their job at Bosse real estate.

I´m thinking Alma will start lying about that they shagged, to save Krille, but she will tell Johan the truth and she will be pregnant- maybe with a magical kid?

Matilda is the beautiful girl at school. Vilgot The Ghoul is in love with her, and she has found comfort with Johan (the witch) when her boyfriend the really popular guy Lukas beat her. Last session The Ghoul Vilgot saw Lukas chag another girl. Matilda seeks comfort in a mystical tunnel- I´m thinking maybe she want to learn witchcraft?

Matildas older sister is one of the victims of the Keygirl in wolf form. This death made the mother of Matilda mad. She, Sara, works at the hospital with Kent (the father of Ghoul Vilgot). Through him she has paid the father Kent with love to make him help her raise the sister from the dead- she has stolen the body, but we still havn´t seen if they succeded.

Jenny a girl at school loves Vilgot. And Mikael the fae loves Jenny. Don´t know what to do with that...

There is a pedofile teacher as well- who only likes the ghoul Vilgot for some reason.

I´m thinking the guys who got hexed by Johan and saw him as a demon (Patte- the son of Bosse) eventually will stop being nazist and join the church to hunt beasts and demons in town?

So this is chaos to me. Don´t know what will happen next...

In the game text you want to be told how it goes when people play. I have been thinking a lot about what I like and what I don´t like so much and I´m gonna try to explain what I think and how I think - as good as I can.

I really like the whole of the game, the package, the feeling, the take on the genre och concept. I like the thinking that runs through all of it. I like the texts in the beginning, the texts about why to play, why to play the different skins, the texts about passing, about the abyss, etc

I like the different skinns- they seem oh so right. I love the different concepts and the take on them.

I like the principles, they really work. Accept people conditionally have been really useful, when I remind myself about it, it always leads to interesting stuff. The same is true with "make the characters feel unaccepted"- sometimes I forget it, and game seems less interesting. Then I remember it and suddenly the characters arn´t heroes anymore, they are outcasts. That´s good.

The system with fires seem really useful, I havn´t really tried it yet, but I looks more useful than Fronts (which I have struggled to actually use in game, not just do as a work burden between session, and then forget in game). I miss Stakes and Countdowns, I feel those two mechanics really give me "food" as a MC- with Stakes I get a feeling for what it is all about, countdowns make me stress the players and the world seems really real when (disastrous) things starts to happen off-screen.

I really like how I fill in the first session work sheet, it was a great help to define everyones wants and means. Good stuff!

So what do I like less?

Overall it seems like there is a bigger gap between fiction and mechanics than in AW- I more often wonder what somethings means or looks like in fiction than I did in AW.

There is also a problem with this:

The PCs shouldn't ever "team up." They can depend on each other, and they can even do things to save one another... but they should never be...

As a group we really liked this, as a MC I liked it- before play we all said- you should love each other, hate each other, fuck each other- the game is about you not about you and the NPCs.

But we didn´t do it.

We arn´t used to a game where we fuck and love each other, we fuck the NPCs and then get into fights among each others about that. For the above statement to become true the game must have much "harder" mechanics to force it that way. No gaming groups (I think) are used to playing with the focus on the PC-PC relationships.

And the strings-setting in the beginning didn´t give us that start either. None of them started with those kinds of relationships. The strings setting didn´t give us that.

So.

The strings are all about PC-PC interaction. It kinda works ok, but not great, to have strings with NPC- you can get +1 on the next roll or do one more damage, but that´s about it. Strings wasn´t made with PC-NPC interaction in mind, and that seems obvious.

If PC-PC interaction (love/ sex/ hate) is not a bigger focus than in an average AW-game, the strings are not used so much. The players will still use strings, but mostly they will move against NPCs. And then the String-system doesn´t really work. It doesn´t say "umph"!

There are so many NPCs, it´s rare that the PC have a string against the person he moves against. And the strings are less powerful against NPCs.

So.

Many of the moves on the skinns are about gettings strings, or getting xp. That´s rather dull. If I´m playing a Fay and Mrs Sumers, the werewolf NPC has killed my sister and I want revenge. What do I do? In fiction, I try to get Mrs Sumers to promise me to do stuff, and make her brake her promises. (will it rain, do you promise?) So that I could do what...  what happens then in fiction?

In mechanics, I get strings on Mrs Sumers. I could build a powerstock and move against her some sessions later.

It all seems not really connected mechanics-fiction somehow. It seems like a boring build-phase before I kind get back at Mrs Sumers.

As a fae I would like to be able to stop time, walk between dimensions, walk into dreams, find gold pots and stuff, charm people, make things look different, etc

The Ghoul can do almost nothing with his moves, but we have been through that. I would like something like The Faceless. Breaking through stuff, being really strong, hurting people by accident. Short rest for the wicked seems rather close to Becoming your darkest self instead of dying.

The witch is the best of the three. I like coven and the hexes. I also like transgressive magic. The witch is cool.

Maybe I have another take on the moves and power. Perhaps the characters shouldn´t be able to do powerful stuff? I think they should. It´s fun to lose temper as a ghoul and tear people apart- or isn´t it?

The basic moves are good with a few exceptions.

I miss read a person (and read sitch)

I do not know when to use shut someone down, it never becomes obvious in the fiction when we play, as manipulate och lash out- which always are obvious. So we never do Shut anybody down.

When you try to keep it together seems to have options that are non-intuitive to me. I don´t really know what to do with them.

Run away from something has given us lot´s of fun.

Nobody has gazed in to the abyss. Don´t know why. Seems cool to me. One of the playser said "it only gives answers..." but thats what Open up your brain does too, and they use that move all the time when we play AW- gotta ask them next time we play.

We played again yesterday and somehow I feel like I messed it up some- it was fun but I have a feeling it could have been awesome- with a lot of potentially really Burning situations.

Introduction
A joggers is out running in the tracks in the forest outside Kristiansborg. Something is watching him and attacks- he doesn´t come home that night.

Johan goes home to his family. His mom and dad sits in the kitchen waiting for him to have a serious discussion.They have just been terminated from the firm and started their own. Their biggest customer is the real estate guy Bosse who runs the club Backside (a 20-year place where Krille can bring in young girls and guys) - he is also the father of Krille and Patte.

The parents have not found out what Johan did to Krille-but his younger sister Alma tells and Johans parents are furious. Their economy depend on Bosses money and they order Johan to make friends with Krille. The mother of Johan slaps him twice in the face and tells him to look after his sister and be an adult. Johan tries to tell them Krille had sex with Alma, but the say it´s not true.

Alma comes in to Johan's room and cries and says she loves Krille. We also get to know that John has his magic stuff hidden in his room.

Vilgot is on his way home when the Abyss hits him with a hallucination. He is in his grave in the darkness and rise up into an operating room where doctors cut into a person who hasn´t gotten anasthesia -nurses are holding the person. The doctor is blind and cuts slowly and feels the upper body with his other hand. The blade rests on the throat of the person.

Vilgot see that it is himself who is on the bench. The knife cut his throat and a roar of love for Matilda is shouted out.

Vilgot come home to his house where Jimi Henrix is played at high volume. He goes in and sees that daddy Kent has cooked a stew that he has not done since the older sister and Vilgots mam and mom Vilgot died in the car accident.

On the table in the kitchen lies a strange magic book of human skin. It reeks of hashish in the house. Vilgot enters the parents' old bedroom and finds Kent and Sara making out. Vilgot squeezes out of his father (Manipulate) that kent will help bring Sara's dead daughter back to life.

Vilgot shows his tattered chest for Sara and says she is making a mistake- he´s a monster, Sara says that Vilgot was a mistake-but now they will succeed. Vilgot and dad are arguing about whether Vilgot is a monster who should die.

Michael comes home to an idyll in his house, where his older sister Linda is cooking for the whole family. Mikael soon realizes that they are too happy. Madeleine has been visiting and Michael sees the enchanted membrane of their eyes. The mother and father are talking about that they thanks to Madeline realized that Michael is adopted and does not belong in the family, he must have his freedom and evolve, not be trapped. They have promised that he the next day will go with Madeleine for a course in her cabin in the woods. Michael gets angry and storms into his room where his parents has packed a bag. The family contantly talks about that Michael belongs to Beyond the Abyss. He will visit Madeleine Beyond The Abyss.

Vilgot knocks on Mikaels bedroom window and tells him about the pre-party they are having at Mikaels place. Vilgot passes over beer. Vilgot says he has to do something (his hunger fopr meat is all consuming). Michael tries to get him to promise that he will be back in 20 minutes. Manipulate. Fail. Vilgot leaves. Someone knocks on the door. (Michael lives in a room which has been part of the garage, and there is a self-entering). The door opens and Michael's younger brother Stefan comes in (he used to play with John's sister, Alma). Stephen's shirt is covered in blood. As Michael tries to stop him to make him explain Stefan gets mad and bites Mikael really hard in the chest. Stefan pushes past and disappear into his room.

Vilgot is out in the woods with his revolver in one a plastic bag. He is looking for meat and stumbles and and falls on his face. Just next to the tracks in the forest. He looses the bag with his gun. Then he gets up his lamp to the bike, it appears that he stumbled upon a human corpse of a jogger, some have taken large bites from the body. Vilgot sinks to his knees and he eats as well. A monster, a wolf circling Vilgot and begins to howl.

Johan runs past his parents and goes to Michael's pre-party. There he meets Jenny and Mariawho is condemning him for what he did to Krille.

Vilgot is attacked by the beast , he gets hold of his revolver and shoots out into the darkness. Then he lits his lamp, the body is dragged away. Vilgot make his way back. In the parking lot where the tracks starts Patricia takes her bike and bikes home.

Vilgot will the pre-party. Jenny flirts.

Party at the youth center. Bosse from school, who works in the dining room, is there and watches. Matilda uses her string on Vilgot for him to check out Luke, Luke has been spending a lot of time with another girl. Before that Vilgot interrupts Luke and Matilda as they are fighting and Luke seems to hurt her arm. Luke is a gordeous older guy who knows karate.

Vilgot finds Luke behind a shed out where he fucks another girl. Vilgot tryes to get the Matilda to take a look herself but he doesn´t tell her why and she stays with her friends.

Michael talks to Jenny, who earlier promised him to remain sober. Now she drinks a lot. She makes him promise to go and ask if Vilgot likes her. She promises that they then will be best friends. Michael asks Vilgot who says he kinda likes Jenny.

All absconds from Johan. John's sister, Alma is there and flirts with Michael. John gets a little angry.

Patte arrives with three older Nazis, they ask John to come out. He goes with them. Michael and Vilgot follow. Patte punches Johan so that he falls down in front of them. Johan speaks in tongues and put a spell on Patte, and then becomes His Darkest self and Pattes sees demons and flees into the woods.

One of the other Nazis show Johan a switchblade. Vilgot sees it, and pulls out his revolver. He throws a bulelt at one of the nazis to scare him butt misses his Manipulate. The nazi doesn´t see him but Bosse sees the gun and screams at him to put it down.

Johan gets a knife in the stomach and collapses. In His Darkest Self he has black eyes and a deep voice. He curses the other three Nazis so they also seee him as a demon, and they flee out in the woods.

Vilgot runs with his gun.

That wa it. Pretty fun, but not as the first session. More rules this time and it seems to work nicely.

What should I do with this?

Don´t know what has happened to Mikaels younger brother Stefan?
Don´t know what will happen with Johan and the crazy nazis who see him as a demon
Don´t really know what to do with the girls, Jenny and Maria

Do u get any ides- please tell me! :)

Need inspiration for the next session on thursday and will work late all nights untill then.

Monsterhearts / Strings with a lot of NPCs

I´ve been thinking some more about strings, and how often you use them. They seem to be a really potent and importent part of the rules and the setting- and I´m just thinking that their usefullness i related to the number of NPCs in the campaign. If you throw in a big number of NPCs, as in AW, you have Strings on maybe 2-5 % of everyone involved.

If there are fewer NPCs the strings get to be more importent. So maybe you should write something about how to use and look upon NPCs- with the Strings it seems like NPCs are more precious to the MC and the players. Every string/ NPC counts- it´s unfun to loose a NPC when you have gained two strings on him.

I´m also thinking about the first session. Maybe it wouldn´t hurt to distribute more strings in the beginning to get things rolling. Like- you could have three "free" strings to distribute in the first session- but for every string gained, someone gaines a string on you. So you get the economy rolling.

You also establish relationships and power in the school really fast and hands-on.

What do you think?

I have also been thinking a lot about inventing more powerful moves for the characters to gain after the fifth improvment- but these moves gotta be learned in game- and they cost you strings to the teacher

Like: the feary gains the power to freeze time, to walk in peoples dreams, to charm etc (typical feary things)

The ghoul get´s some of the powerful-fighting moves from AW

The witch- I don´t know yet...

Maybe this is a bad idea?

Does anyone know if there are any finished hacks- or more or less finished so I can just take them and play? - and hopefully give some feedback...

Apocalypse World / Angels infirmary

Last session an Angel with infirmary joined to game. None of us really understood in what way the infirmary is like the Savyheads workspace. Could he build things on patients, like plastic arms and stuff- or just fixed them up really good after battle. What´s special about the infirmary? Is it just for doing medic-things or could he, like, invent new life-forms?

I also have a question about drugs...

In our game the hocus invets a drug from his own blood- there is a huge device that trnsforms the blood. The blood drug is extremly addictive. Our driver Marlon is addicted to the drug and uses it to be able to drive for days.

In our last game the Hoces died and his cult too. A huge can of blood drug was left behind in the care of an npc. So Marlon has a hang over and wants the drug.

My question is about making the drug a threat and how to make a good custom move for his addiction. Or is it more fun to just play it out? I think it´s kinda hard to have Marlon role act under fire all the time until he get´s the drug, becouse that directs his agenda to getting the drug- and I´m not sure that´s what the player want´s to do.

The NPC Audrie- who got the drug most absolutely plans to use it to either control Marlon or the whole city.

The Hocus lover still lives, and is about to give birth to his child, so may have more potent blood in the story...

Any thoughts or advice?

Some questions and thoughts after tonights game.

The Hocus in our game has a cult with: Fortune +1 Surplus: 2 Barter, Growth, Stupor, Violence Want: Hunger
They are dedicated, successful recruiters, drug-fixated, and violent

So The hocus rolled +10- he got his barter before game begun- and when we started his cult was violent and drugged- which meant they attackted people in the hardhold.

This was mighty fun and dramatic- but after the game I got this feeling of cheating-  the Hocus passed the test but still his Cult messed it all up, attacking an innocent little girl and all... It ended with the cult and the characters being chased out of town...

Did I "cheat"? Do you interpret violent and drugged as I do?

One of his cult-guys also wanted to overthrow him- just as a MC-move- ok?

The player said that his guy wasn´t that powerful- the hocus couldn´t really do anything. Then, just now, I read that Frenzy effects a mob, not just the cult, but any mob. So he can speak to anyone? Anytime? In the middle of a fight even?


I also had some problems with The Driver- he was cool and powerful and all- but it was hard to get him "hooked" to the world. He just drives around- I can´t really mess with his car, and his true element is on the road, so it´s hard to invent old lovers, friends associates and stuff. Well, maybe it actually isn´t... hmmm..

Anyway, I did feel that it was harder to get the driver into the drama... Any thoughts on that?

We had a Brainer too. So awesome!!!

Something that would be really useful is an big empty countdown you can print and put on the table in front of the players, you know with the logotype and all. I know I can make my own, but it wouldn´t be that nice- and I´m thinking the countdown is already done, so it´s just to enlarge it, and put it on a file for download, just a humle request :)

Apocalypse World / My first front

This is my first front for our game. We have played two sessions. We are now forced to wait a while for the third so I thinking I should take the time to really get how to build and use fronts. I have som thinking and questions in the end of the texts.

On big question is also how to use the “MC Moves” in game. Should I make list of the fitting moves for each session, should I just have the in the back of my mind or should I have the list in front of me to look at? I know is seems to be a bit dumb question and I know you can answer it with- do what you like, but I wanna know how you do it.

Our second session started with the players looking at me, me looking at the MC moves, not finding anything fitting, the players looking at med, me looking at the move, me ignoring my front and just hit them with a random car bomb (which didn´t really fit the front but got the whole session started- and rocking).

Two player- one is the operator Wilson, the other is a Battlebabe named Beastie. Wilson is Beasties older brother. Wilson pursues luxury, guards things, helps with deals and fucks the hardholder Tao for money. They have a crew of three (+Beastie), Pe the gunlugger, Wasted the driver and Jamie the medic.

Front
Is called: Civil war
Expresses: Hunger
Dark future/ agenda: The coast falls into total civil war, a new apocalypse, friends kill each other, everything is thrashed
Stakes: Will Temple (the Hold) go to war? Will the refuges be protected? Will Taser get his revenge? Is Tao (the hardholder of Temple) really a part of the Sun cult???

Called: Storms
Kind: Landscape
Impulse: Furnace, to consume things
Description and cast: Storms, tsunami waves, lightning and thunder
Custom move: When you move in the wilderness roll +Weird. 10+ The weather is fine. 7-9 Storms is coming but you find shelter. On a miss- attacked by a storm, and no shelter to be found..
Countdown: 3- the water is rising drowning several of the villages on the coast. 6- balls of lightning roams the countryside 9- earthquakes. 10- Gigantic wave throws water all the way in to Temple. 11- Lightning puts  the hold on fire. 12 Gigantic waves crashes in on the hold

Threat 3.
Called: Sun-cult
Kind: Brutes
Impulse: Cult, Victimize and incorporate
Description and cast: Foster (father of Taser), Taser (they killed his girlfriend in 1th session), Laura (hires mercenaries) , Milkshake (lost love of soldier Chipdale), Starshine (their sister), (Tao?????)
Custom move: When trying to make people in Temple work to build defenses against Monk or the weather roll +Weird. 10+ they are helping. 7-9 they are part of the sun cult and try to make you join whilst working. Miss- they are part of the sun cult and think only prayers make the sun come back

Threat 4.
Called: Tao and her soldiers of the hardhold Temple
Kind: Warlord
Impulse: Dictator, impulse to control
Description and cast: Tao and her female soldiers. Chipdale
Custom move: When making deals in Temple roll +Sharp. 10- not noticed. 7-9, the deal is on but the soldiers wanna know what´s going on. Miss- Tao takes her share or forbids the deal…

This is the basic front. There are some dilemmas though.. Chipdale is a soldier of Tao, but in game she has been helping them, to get them to kidnap her lover Milkshake who has joined the Sun cult. So I´m thinking about making a front about love, somehow.

There are also two members of the Operater of the crew- Wasted and Pe. Wasted recently was really injured in an explosion and mysteriously woke up from her narcossis and declared her love for Beastie. Also, when Wasted was almost dying one of the other crew members Pe declared his love for Wasted. So have a triangle there to play with somehow.

Another triangle is their sister Starshine who is a member of the Sun cult. She loves her younger brother Beastie and hates her older Wilson who abandoned her for money at early age.

Then there is Tavi the brainer. He appeared first as a member of Monk gang. Then Beastie killed him while he touched him, poisoning him with his own mind, his auora. He seemed to live on inside Beastie. Then we discovered that he is inside all of the Sun Cult people as a mental virus or something. He now also has infected Wilson. I have some hunch that Tavi is not taking orders from Monk, but that he is a virus, or a person who can become a mental virus, and that he has an agency of his own, he want´s to control/ ruin the whole coast. I think maybe I should make him a threat in a front. It would be good if I could make him a front together with maybe Wasted and Pe, with their love issues. Don´t know how yet.

There is a super doctor as well, “owned” by Tao. His name is Oscar, and the characters made him save Wasteds life in return for forcing the refugees out of Temple (something Taos ordinary soldiers were reclined to do, since the whole town would hate them).
