Hey all!

I'm designing an apocalypse world hack called Urban Shadows. It's a game meant to emulate stories like The Dresden Files and Angel.

I have nine playbooks completed and an MC playbook in the making. Here is the link to the files.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v1dzfzn0bvdxgr4/IlfhqzalfY

Here's the blurb;

Urban Shadows is a table-top role-playing game set in a modern urban setting with a dark shadow cast over it. In Urban Shadows, Vampires, Were-wolfs, Faeries, Ghosts and all manner of powerful creatures roam our world preying on humanity and it's ignorance of their existence. But not all of them want to hurt or hunt humanity, some of them fight against their natures and expectations to try and live a life among mortality, constantly struggling to be a part of our world yet always apart.

But where there is life, there is hope. Humanity is not alone in their struggles, there are some who have seen the darkness, have let it in and choose to stand up and face the night.

In the game, you control a member of one of four factions in play around the world. Mortality, the humans with nothing to offer except insight, guile and resolve. Power, humans who have been imbued with awesome powers and heavy burdens. Night, those who were once human and now stalk the nights and hunter. Wild, creatures and being from outside our world who have come to stake their claim.

Who will you be? Which side will you choose? Will you be strong enough to face the darkness without and within?

We also have a google community with members always welcome to add insights and feedback.

Monsterhearts / The Reverent - New Skin
« on: December 26, 2012, 09:26:32 AM »
The Reverent is a skin for a special teenager who has a powerful connection to the Almighty and can channel holy power to protect the damned and condemn the innocent. Ooops, I meant that the other way around. I'm a little worried about overlap with The Angel but I think it's different enough to work alongside it. This is still VERY much in an experimental state and feedback and comments would be very much appreciated. I am happy to modify or add to what I have here to better suit everyone's vision. So without further delay, here it is...

Hello, I started hacking AW to accomodate star wars roleplaying this week and so far i really like what I've come up with. I've done up ten playbooks including two Jedi playbooks (Guardian and Consular) to reflect the different focuses of the Jedi order. I've kept the basic and peripheral moves the same with the exception of open your brain which I have replaced with a more star wars feeling trust in the force. I also replaced Weird with Attuned. I can't take all the credit here, I was heavily inspired by a fan made Scoundrel and Jedi playbook I found somewhere on the net but the file doesn't indicate the creator so I have no way of asking them if what I've borrowed is alright or not. Hopefully they will enjoy what I have come up with as much as I do and be glad it's inspiring people.

So here is a couple of my playbooks and the new moves (including force powers) for you to look over and share your thoughts.

Apocalypse World / An Apocalyptic GenCon
« on: July 12, 2012, 12:41:11 PM »
Hey all,

Does anyone know if copies of Apocalypse World will be for sale at GenCon? I'm getting a lot of requests from friends to pick up copies for them while I'm down there, not to mention I want to buy myself a spare. I was hoping that maybe one of the 'indie' distributors might have it but since this is my first GenCon I don't actually know what I'm talking about. :)

Thank you.

Apocalypse World / An idea for Hardholds
« on: July 10, 2012, 08:39:49 AM »
So I thought of this idea a while back but never put it down onto 'paper' before and finished it last night. I was wondering what y'all thought about it. It's an additional hardholder guide and it also doubles as a front for MC's if the players all or mostly live within an NPC controlled hardhold. It has rules for affecting fortunes and moonlighting within the hold. This gives the Hocus, Operator and really any other playbook who moves into those moves a greater investment in seeing the holding prosper. Let me know if you have any suggestions or constructive critques. Thanks!

and before anyone asks, yes I stole this concept from the Battlestar Galactica board game. :)

*edit* forgot to add into the document that all clocks begin play at 9:00 and any clock that reaches 0:00 send the hardhold into absolute pandemonium! (ie. the holding starts burning down, the entire populace begins attacking one another for what few resources remain, the holding's gang starts killing anything that moves and move to execute the hardholder. not pretty stuff)

Apocalypse World / Hot Hot PC on PC Action!
« on: May 02, 2012, 06:49:23 PM »
So, recently in one of my games several of the PC's have decided to throw caution to the wind and have begun outright attacking each other when they feel threatened. I, as any good MC should, can't help but feel a bit of glee as these trad gamers break out of their shells and experiment a little.

But that isn't why I'm posting. My question is this. If PC #1 attacks PC#2 on normal terrain without any special circumstance. Is PC #1 Going Aggro (or seizing by force is the other is aware and armed against the attack) and PC #2 interfering? Or is PC #2 Acting Under Fire and PC #1 interfering? Or if they've both agreed to attack one another am I simple exchanging harm for harm as one of my moves?

In the book it gives an example a pc pulling a gun on another pc and the pc being attacked acts under fire to avoid while the attacker interferes. But I wonder if this is the only way it should be done or not.

Apocalypse World / Some questions that have been on my brain lately...
« on: March 14, 2012, 01:36:28 PM »
Hey all! I've had a few questions on the brain as the title implies and thought I'd bring them up to the group here for some answers/clarifications.

Question 1: For the weapon the MG (machine gun) the stats in the rulebook give two separate stats. In the gunlugger entry and playbook it indicates it is mg (3-harm close/far *area* messy) but in the character's crap section it lists it as mg (3-harm close/far *autofire* messy). Which is the correct entry? I think it makes a big difference in particular circumstances, for example when accuracy is a concern.

Question 2: For operator's gigs, some of the gigs seem kind of ambiguous to me. For example what would Enforcement and Campanionship include? I see enforcement like racketeering and companionship as being a mooch off of someone with barter to spare and wants someone pretty to hang off their arm. But do you see these as having more applications? I'd like to spice them up a little in my games if possible.

Thanks as always!

other lumpley games / [DitV] Canadian Dogs
« on: February 06, 2012, 03:23:37 PM »
Hello all!

It's my birthday on March 24th and my wife is hounding me for b-day ideas. I was thinking of putting a copy of Dogs in the Vineyard on my list but live in Canada and I wonder if it would arrive in time. When I ordered APOC WORLD it took several weeks (worth every minute though!!!) and don't want to have it stuck in shipping when cake day somes around.

So my question is, have any of my canadian brothers or sisters ordered this book online and remember how long it took to ship?

Thanks all. Lovin' every minute of my Baker games!

Hello all,

It's highly unlikely that unless you grew up in Canada you would have heard of a series of high school dramas filmed and set in our very own Toronto, Ontario entitled Degrassi, but if you have then I hope you can appreciate this.

My wife was watching this on Netflix and I caught a few scenes here and there and one interesting thing leapt out at me as I did. All the of the teenagers were referring to themselves in bizarre and unique nicknames, real names are rarely used and I kid you not they all sound like Apocalypse World characters.

Here's a few shining examples;
Mr. Walfish
Snake
Joey
Tessa
Bronco
Scooter
Clutch
Claude
Heather
L.D.
Wheels
Spike
BLT

Does that not sound like a list of names for playbooks?! It's so awesome!

Anyways, enjoy! Or don't. :)

Apocalypse World / To drive or not to drive.
« on: December 14, 2011, 08:11:02 AM »
Hey folks,

So i've been running a couple of Apoc World games for some friends which has been awesome but I keep running into a 'problem' with nearly every player. Everyone wants a frickin' car/vehicle. One guy wants an RV, another a dirt bike, and another a jeep, and so on and so on. How do you guys handle this? Do you allow people to take one but get to benefit from it when making rolls, or do you forbid them?

One of my players is playing a Driver and he has a couple of cars as well he should. I feel the Driver is the Driver for the sheer reason that he has access to wheels which is what makes him special (of course the Chopper would be the same). Am I de-valueing his role by granting players these requests? Should I be more lenient with this or more strict?

What is your experience as fellow MC's in this regard?

Apocalypse World / Form Fillable Playbooks
« on: December 05, 2011, 07:22:12 AM »
Has anyone been able to find a set of form-fillable playbooks, or is anyone currently working on them? I'm running a Skype Apoc World game with some friends and think it would be mighty handy to have.

Heck! If no one does but can tell me what program I need to make my own, I would be down with doing it myself (I think...)

Thanks for your help!

Apocalypse World / My first Apocalypse World session as MC
« on: December 01, 2011, 12:14:50 PM »
Some of you may have read my post from Monday talking about my first session playing Apocalypse World. It was super fun and I fell in love with it instantly. Last night I convinced some friends to let me GM the game for them (all of them newbies to the game) and it was simply put amazing. I have been GM-ing games for 10+ years and I have never felt so comfortable in the GM seat as I did with this game. I went into it with zero prep, minus rules prep of course, and the storyline just flowed naturally. The moves all gave the players chances to ask questions that forwarded along the plot and gave me ample opportunity to bring them some hurt and make their lives interesting.

Our characters included an Operator, a Driver, and a Savvyhead. I was surprised no one chose a combat monster as most games seem to head in that direction. The operators gigs gave the game a seamless introduction as he contracted the other characters into helping him with his gigs. This led to some wonderful trouble including the driver getting captured by a gasoline guzzling cult while trying to make his delivery. From there the story just took off. Wonderufl time!

This game seriously rocks! I have found my new favourite! :)

Apocalypse World / S-Harm? Where do I find rules on this?
« on: November 30, 2011, 06:31:08 PM »
I did a search and couldn't find it, does anyone know which chapter or page talks about S-harm? I have searched through the book but clearly I'm missing it. Thanks!

Apocalypse World / My First Apocalypse World Session
« on: November 28, 2011, 09:41:16 AM »
Last night I finally got the chance to play Apocalypse World and it was everything I was hoping it would be. We chose to go with a Swampocalypse where the world is covered in bog and whole cities were swallowed up by the muck. I got to play a Hardholder in charge of an old cruise liner called Maiden (because it was about to set off on it's maiden voyage when the world went to shit and so when survivors came upon it they saw all sorts of signs with the word maiden voyage on it, hence "Maiden") where the main deck is used for a marketplace and the plentiful cabins allow for places for people to sleep and live and the main swimming pool is an ampitheatre for plays, concerts and occastional UFC fight.

The other players wrote up a chopper who ran a gang out Seadoo riders and swamp skimmers, a Freak with all sorts of messed up mutations from a colonies of other freaks, and the Juggernaut in his makeshift metal suit just lookin to make a buck. It was a great crew and I think we all had a blast! Our MC did a great job introducing a plethora of NPC's for us to love and hate and I can't wait to see where things go!

So, in closing, Apocalypse World is as great on paper as it is in practise! Thanks Vincent for a great game!
