Dungeon World / Re: My hack at a DW GM screen
« on: January 20, 2013, 07:56:28 AM »
I suspected that might be the case.  Nope, no selling, it'll be free.  Happy to swap out the art if need be, just let me know if that comes to be an issue.

Dungeon World / My hack at a DW GM screen
« on: January 19, 2013, 07:00:04 PM »

I threw together a screen for myself, and I added a few images from DW- owners please let me know if you would like me to remove those.  The screen is pretty bare bones, and I don't include all text for all moves as I assume anyone using it will have read the rules beforehand.

Let me know any suggestions, and I'm also happy to provide the InDesign file if you want to play around with it.

I plan on placing it in something like this (though this one is absurdly expensive):

Dungeon World / DW Font?
« on: January 19, 2013, 02:15:36 PM »
Anyone know if the font is available?  I'm building a 3-page GM screen (which I'll gladly share publicly) and I'd love to be able to use the font.  Not sure if that's part of the creative commons element or no.  I've searched for it but can't seem to find it.

Dungeon World / Using miniatures... lightly
« on: November 30, 2012, 09:16:31 AM »
My group has been enjoying our very new game of DW thus far, but somewhat against the spirit of the thing, we've made a gentle use of miniatures and I wonder if others are doing the same.

During some of the more complex combat situations, such as 6 opponents say, it became confusing as to where exactly everyone was, who could see what, etc.

While we know the whole point of DW is to keep narrative flowing and not rely on minis and such, it just ended up being helpful to throw some down on the table to give a sense of who was where.  No hex lines or anything like that, more of a loose visual so people could remember which ork was where, who was ducking under the cart, etc.

Anyone else doing this, or using them differently?  Any arguments for not using them at all?  I'm just curious as to how people are handling complex combat.

Dungeon World / doubling on moves?
« on: November 20, 2012, 12:25:33 PM »
Hi all,

We kicked off a campaign this past weekend and everyone had a blast.  We had a few areas where the thief wanted to do some pretty cinematic stuff, and I may have messed up how to handle it.

Example:  He cut himself out of an ork slaver's net, no problem.  As the slobbering ork is running towards him, the thief wanted to duck and roll into the ork, sinking his dagger in his tendons to immobilize him.  In the heat of the moment and to keep the game moving, I went with two rolls for him:  a Defy Danger + DEX to roll up to the ork accurately, then Hack and Slash to cut through the slavers Kickin' Boots.

Thoughts?  Should I just have used one or the other?  In this case in the fiction there definitely needed to be some kind of gap-closing for the thief to get his dagger into range.

Many thanks on any tips!

Dungeon World / Terrifying tag for monsters- anything mechanical?
« on: November 14, 2012, 05:01:11 PM »
Hey all, quick question on the Terrifying tag.  It says it causes fear, but does that have any kind of mechanical effect on the PCs?  Within the fiction of course you can have horses bolt, peasants screaming, etc., but beyond telling the characters how scary it is, does is do anything like a -1 forward on direct attacks or anything like that?

Dungeon World / Combination rolls
« on: September 17, 2012, 10:15:59 AM »
Hey all,

Just ran DW at NerdNYC's Recess event.  It went great, thanks to many tips from this board.  Something came up that I thought was very fun at the table, but now want to clarify ruleswise.

Our rugged Ranger got overrun by a rat horde after he rolled a 5 trying to Parlay with them to get them to move. Covered in pox-ridden rats and being bitten all over, the Wizard thought to cast Magic Missile.  Now, he was casting it AT the Ranger.  He stipulated that he was casting a dozen tiny missiles to hit the rats.  The Ranger asked if he could Defy Danger by turning sideways so they would only hit the rats.  I said sure, but if the Wizard doesn't roll a 10+ and if you don't pass your roll, you're hit too.

Well, the Wizard hit a 12 and the Ranger a 10.  So I said, done!  Smells like bbq rat in here, but no wound for the Ranger.

Does this seem like the right use of the rules?  Or should that have be a Wizard only roll?  It was fun, so I'm not overly concerned, but I am curious.

Dungeon World / Re: super dumb combat question

Told you guys it was super dumb!

Thanks all, this makes SO much more sense now.  Honestly, I think something like that Orc example should be included in the rules, specifically a combat play example (in addition to the longer play example currently there).

Dungeon World / super dumb combat question
« on: September 04, 2012, 05:54:02 PM »
Just played for the second time last night, and something came up during combat that was unclear.  When a player hacks n slashes, a 7-9 means the opponent gets a counter attack.  Makes sense.  But what happens when the goblin attacks our heros, and rolls a 7?  Do the characters get a free counterattack?  Am I messing the entire combat up by even rolling this way for a goblin, as I suspect?

Dungeon World / Re: Question on rotes

Thanks all.  For some reason I thought rotes didn't need a die role.

Dungeon World / Question on rotes
« on: August 11, 2012, 05:49:45 PM »
As I understand it, rotes can be cast any time, any number of times.  Is this incorrect?  I ask because the Cleric can take First Aid as an advanced move, making Cure Light Wounds a rote.  If that's the case, does that mean a Cleric, after a battle, can go to every character and keep Curing Light Wounds until they are back to max HP?

Dungeon World / Games seeking players/Players seeking games section?
« on: July 02, 2012, 01:07:03 PM »
Hi all,

Perhaps it's standard practice to use other forums for starting up DW games (, various local gaming boards like nerdnyc etc) but I was wondering if it might make sense to have a sub-section of this forum for that purpose.

Personally I'd love to have a section where I could recruit players or join a game that is looking for more players.  Is it kosher to post that kind of thing here?  Or is it possible to set up a specific section for that?
