Apocalypse World / Re: [AP] Depth of Life

Nice Work Dusk!!

One small detail - Just as the end scene was fading to black, Mercy looked down and saw food trays from the Loco at the feet of her poisoned and bloated guards.  Now Mercy knows who's to blame.

Can't wait for Season 2 of DoL guys!!

Not to mention, you've got the Operator sitting there holding onto some precious cargo.  Maybe not to the original buyer, but I bet there's a few people in the world who would do ANYTHING to get their hands on it...and the word's out, this Operator's got a whole case of it!

Apocalypse World / Re: Look-alike (rules question)

I think I'd describe the scene, and then ask the player if they'd like to read a Sitch. (Maybe adding that Dweller looks anxious, or nervous) Then it's in the player's hands how "suspicious" they are of this Dweller-a-like.

Even on a hit, they may not ask the right questions, in which case you're free to have your look-a-like cause their mayhem.

Apocalypse World / First Time Roleplayers - Using AW as an Introduction
« on: January 25, 2012, 12:51:52 PM »
So, I've been participating in what has been called a Geek night for the past 3 years.  It started out just as a night to watch Battlestar Gallactica, but I soon introduced my friends to a variety of board games, and these have taken over Geek night.

Recently we began playing a game called Risk: Legacy.  Basically it is a game of Risk, but the game evolves each time you play it, and the world takes shape with each subsequent game (For the first 15 games or so).  Basically we've been playing and slowly destroying the planet.

This got me thinking about AW, and I've now convinced my friends to try AW once we finish our game of Risk, and set it in the world we have created (and destroyed).

Now my friend has been opposed to Roleplaying his whole life, he's a sports guy, so I figure I only have one shot at converting him. :D  I'd be looking at a 5 person game, three players having never RP'd before, one experienced gamer who has played 1 session of AW, and myself.

So, I was hoping for some advice on which playbooks I should include and which ones to leave out for a first time gamer.  And any other tips or tricks on how AW is different with people who has never played a tapletop RPG before.  And basically any other advice is always welcome.

This is great stuff guys. THANKS!

I've been mulling over a playbook for the last couple weeks, and I think this thread will really help me cement some ideas. :)

Daniel,

I love that move.  I want to make a heart-eater now, just to get that move! So many great possibilities.

I will say though, outside of that particular moment, we probably would have had you drop the towel.  It just didn't fit for that tone.

So, to answer the OP, I'd say it's truly a case by case basis.  For the most part, I love references to the past, punny names (I had a character who worshiped St. Rbucks...just a starbucks sign that lost it's A).  They add a lot of flavour for me, and I enjoy the quick chuckle that comes with a good name.

That said, there's times where the humour has to take a back seat.  When things are getting really heated, that may not be the best time to introduce your cult's new uniforms as Fast food mascots.

There's a time and place for everything, and having humour dotted throughout AW makes it an okay place to live sometimes.  So I say there's nothing wrong with it, just use with caution.  Don't kill someone else's moment.

(Sorry if this is a disjointed post, writing at work isn't the most conducive place to write thought out responses)

Apocalypse World / Re: Apocalypse Reloaded, or "Twenty Years After"

Our group had talked about doing that, going back to our first AW campaign world, but our MC is going to be moving soon, so it looks like it may not happen (at least for a while).  Would love to hear how this turns out if you end up doing it!!

When I played a Driver, I liked to think of it this way.

"Sure, there's other jerks out there on the road, but NO ONE can drive as well as I can."

I'd suggest that anyone can drive a vehicle, but if they have to start pulling off stunt moves/super speeds, or anything other than following a straight line, I'd consider if a Cool Under Fire roll is needed.

Sure, but Moves Snowball, y'know?

I aim for 2 or 3 advances per player per session.

As a player, I consider it a successful session if I advance once, usually aiming for 4-6 XP ticks per session.

That said, I've had great sessions where I only got 1 xp tick, and others where I got 4 advancements.

I don't think there is a real status quo (in AW the Status is NOT quo) with respect to advancements, however I agree that it can be a good gauge of how much spotlight each player is getting.

Apocalypse World / Re: Why I hate Apocalypse World

I hate Apocalypse World, because it's ruined all other Roleplaying games for me.
Even Lady Blackbird?!?  OH NOES!

I'm crawling back to AW again this weekend, like an abused spouse...

Maybe I should ammend my statement.  I hate Chroma, because he's ruined all other MC/DM/GM's for me.
