Apocalypse World / Touched by Death
« on: January 27, 2012, 10:59:32 PM »
So a Touchstone player (Hi Nomad!) wanted to take Touched by Death as their first advance, and I said, "sure, but it won't do you any good unless you also take either Healing Touch, or Prepared for the Inevitable".

<Quote pg 217><b>Touched by death:</b> whenever someone in your care dies, you get +1weird (max +3).
If the angel kills her on purpose, no, that doesn’t really count as “in her care.” Just being in the angel’s presence doesn’t count as in her care either.</quote>

We've established that Nike (the Touchstone) helps the Angel in their infirmary, so they do sometimes, sort of, take care of people. It's the "in your care" part that I'm stuck on. In my mind you have to be actively working on the person for it to count, you have to be invested in their survival. "Invested" as in, "paying for the treatment" in some way, either through Stock, or through Healing Touch.

Without this interpretation, Touched by Death is a really cheap (ie inexpensive) way to get up to +4 to their weird for one single advance.  As long as the player says they put a band-aid on someone who is dying, and who will die because NPC's die all the time, they get a +1 Weird.  And given how often NPC's die, this could happen very quickly, especially since only the Angel can actually do anything mechanically to influence healing or survival.

What do you all think?

Apocalypse World / Re: Improvements/Change Your Character To A New Type

Do people usually let PC's have access to all 5 of the bottom advances, or just the ones they haven't used already?

Meaning, in the example given above the Angel already switched to a Driver so cannot later choose "change to another playbook" again.

Limiting the bottom advances to single-use would "keep" players from switching playbooks to gain access to the "+1 to any stat" multiple times.

Good idea!  That makes utter failure much less likely.  Now, what can I do to convince another PC to become a follower...

Thanks, I thought I had that part right.

Even at +2 that's still a lot of failures though.  Hocus followers are trouble waiting to happen.  Sometimes they don't even wait, though.

Apocalypse World / [Rules Question} Hocus Fortunes
« on: October 03, 2011, 09:54:54 PM »
All Hocus characters get Fortunes: fortune, surplus and want all depend on your followers. At the beginning of the session, roll+fortune.

And, By default you have around 20 followers, loyal to you but not fanatical. They have their own lives apart from you, integrated in the local population (fortune+1 surplus: 1-barter want: desertion).

So this means that the Hocus has to roll 2D6+1 at the beginning of each session to see how the followers are doing.

The only way to increase this is to take the option:
Your followers are involved in successful commerce. +1fortune.

If you take this option (at start or through advancement), you would then get to roll 2D6+2 at the start of each session, correct?

Thanks.

I've been playing an Angel, and my answer has been to use the Angel Kit first to stabilize wounded to 6:00 and then to use Healing Touch to get them to 3:00.  The danger with Angel Kit, though, is that if you miss the roll the patient gets another +1 Harm, and you could kill them.  (Not such a bad deal if you've got Touched by Death.)

Separately, if the character has both Weird and Cool highlighted it is possible to get 3 xp with one Healing Touch.  +1 for Weird for Healing Touch, +1 for Cool for Act Under Fire and +1 if the Hx rolls over.  Odds are against this happening regularly, of course.

MC Scott is running a PBP on RPOL.net, he might let more people join in.  Try this link to the game, but you'll have to ask permission to join to see anything.
