blood & guts / Re: Alternate core mechanic (Trollworld)
« on: November 17, 2013, 09:52:51 PM »

To me, the AW rules revolve around moves -- the stats are derived from moves, the playbooks are mostly just collections of moves, the gear is defined such to work well as part of moves, the MC's participation is a list of moves, etc. Obviously there's more to the rules than just moves, but very little that doesn't interact closely with moves. I love this because the very structure of moves cuts out a lot of the bullshit that weighs down other RPGs; it's hard to write a pointless move without making it obvious how pointless it is.

So this proposal sounds like defining stats and stat-limits totally disconnected from moves, e.g., without due regard to what the PCs are actually going to do during the game and whether this mechanic is the best way for them to do it (or at least a better way than the existing stats). Maybe if you explain your motivation or intention more I would have better feedback.

Apocalypse World / Re: Playbook focus season 2, and what about the Skinner?

I always assumed the name of this playbook was a reference to B. F. Skinner, the father of behavioral psychology.

Was there supposed to be a link there? (Am I missing it somehow?) Some forums don't allow you to post a link until you've had 2-3 other posts already, as an anti-spam measure.

I am a big fan of using Do Something Under Fire as a passive-perception/reactive-dodge type move.

E.g.,
PC: "So I take another swing at the Chopper..."
Me: "Wait, roll to do it under fire."
PC: "Uh, ok, why...?"
Me: "Roll and find out."
PC: "Sure, that's, um, a... 9."
Me: "So, you catch movement out of the corner of your eye: this guy is going to bash you in the back of the head with bottle. You can suffer that damage, OR you can block him but then take -1 on your punching."
PC: "Shite. I'll risk the -1."
Me: "OK, you deflect the incoming blow at the last minute. Now Sieze By Force, but at -1..."
etc.

Don't forget the Harm Move!!!

I always forget about making the Harm Move. But many of the outcomes of that move are exactly the sort of effects you want Grungi to inflict: lose your footing (maybe right out the window...), lose your grip on something you're holding (like a glove...), lose track of someone (Grungi gets away...) etc.

As long as you deal at least 1-harm, then even if you fail the Harm Move you can trade the 1-harm for such an effect anyway.
