Dungeon World / [Dungeon World] Grokking the Monsters...
« on: April 21, 2014, 07:14:46 AM »
I'm still a little fuzzy on how all the bits given for monsters work in DW.

Instincts, for instance: do they have a game affect or are they basically a one sentence version of the behavioral descriptions given in most monster manuals? And the bullet pointed actions, how are they applied? I understand the basic mechanic of 'player fail = Monster move' but I'm not real clear on how and when to apply them, mechanically speaking. Am I just being dense or do other people have to jump this conceptual hurdle when learning the game?

I probably really need to see a full game in action or participate in one. If anyone is running a PbP game over the next month, I'd love to jump in just so I can figure it out before running my hybrid D&D/DW game...

Dungeon World / [Dungeon World] Swashbuckler World?
« on: April 21, 2014, 06:52:41 AM »
I'm about to run a Dungeon World mini campaign, and for the setting my players picked a fantasy version of sort of 17th century France.

I'm not too worried about figuring out the setting, but I'm curious if anyone has any rules tweaks or suggestions for changes to the classes to reflect a more Renaissance era setting than the typical pseudo medieval setting. Bonus points if there's already a Swashbuckler or Musketeer class out there.

Dungeon World / Dungeon World- monster damage notation

My scan of the monster section didn't turn this up...but why do some monsters have the letter b (or w) before their damage expression?

Dungeon World / Dragonborn and Tieflings?

Has anyone written up moves for including these two races in Dungeon World? I like the flavor of both of them. How would you do it?

Dungeon World / Dungeon World: Is PBP possible?
« on: April 21, 2014, 06:08:38 AM »
Hi All,

I've been reading through the Dungeon World book lately, and become inspired to run something in the style of D&D, but without D20 mechanics, which DW seems ideally suited for. My problem is that I don't seem to have regular face to face group time, nor even Skype/Google Hangout/whatever. So, I'm wondering how difficult Dungeon World would be to run in a PBP format?

My instinct says it probably won't work too well, but then again there seem to be large descriptive passages punctuated by occasional dice rolls, so it isn't impossible. Has anybody tried this? Did it work, and if so were there any tricks to make the PBP format flow a little more smoothly?

Thanks

I won't really say 'sell me on', because I'm not sure I want to be. It's been cropping up more and more lately in its various incarnations as a recommended system, so I did some looking around to find out more.

What I'm seeing is a system that defines various character professions in great detail to the extent that it's recommended that nobody run the same one as anyone else. That makes me skeptical, as I prefer more open approaches, but I'm still curious. Then I hear that you can unlock certain abilities by having your character have sex with other characters....w...t...f...???

There's got to be something good about this considering the number of recommendations I'm seeing...what am I missing?

Apocalypse World / Apocalypse World -- Is there an Exalted hack?
« on: April 19, 2014, 10:35:36 AM »
Does anyone know of one?

The closest I've found is some work done on an AW hack called Set Apart (which was kind of like Exalted but not exactly) from a couple years back.

Apocalypse World / Historical Settings for Apocalypse World?
« on: April 19, 2014, 10:26:49 AM »
Anybody tried this? I don't mean creating a whole hack, just switching things up so that you can use the same playbooks but redefine terms. I've been obsessing about the American Civil War for a while and I was thinking that an AW game set in Bleeding Kansas or in Georgia would be pretty cool -- you could throw in the Vicksburg Flu or zombies to make it extra apocalyptic but the war was plenty apocalytic all by itself -- and trying to think what you could do with the different playbooks. I guess you could always go the Deadlands route and set in the Weird West, but I dunno, the Weird West feels pretty played out to me.

Apocalypse World / Re: Tribe 8 with Apocalypse World?
« on: April 19, 2014, 10:19:33 AM »
Don't know Tribe 8 I'm afraid, but just wanted to say 'crack on'. There's loads of meta plot heavy 90s game that creak under their original systems. This sort of mash up should happen more often.

I still see some more changes
