Hoarders and gifts

Hoarders have the move sticky fingers which is when they give a gift there can use sticky fingers to attempt to return it to them esoterically later.

What is meant by a gift? does trading count? if you give something to someone with the expectation that they do something for you later a gift?

It's pretty much just if it really fits the word, gift. Like, sometimes you totally do give a gift with the expectation of something in return, but the context and the way it's done makes it a gift. The test, if you're not sure, is to turn it to the group. Just ask out loud, "Is that really a gift?" You'll get an answer.

I don't think every trade should count, but if the hoarder is asked to trade something for something s/he doesn't necessarily need. They offer you shotgun shells for your cans of turnips but you don't use a shotgun. It's still barter for barter, but you're doing them a favor by making the trade, so it counts as a gift. Whatever the fiction demands.

Sounds spot on to me.

Default is to ask the group.

But, on the other hand, why not have every trade trigger the move? Not only is the potential fuel for complication (even a 10+ hints at something interesting; does the other person know the Hoarder has their hard-earned trade now?) but it really does make the Hoarder a hoarder. Even doing business with a Hoarder means you would probably not get a fair deal.

This is a good point, actually. After all, it's your job to make apocalypse world seem real and make the characters' lives not boring, not deny them of moves or bonuses.

Plus there is always the chance they will blow the roll and lose that item forever. Is the item on loan from their hoard? What happens when their hoard wants it back? The move is really nothing but trouble, so it may be best to let your hoarder make the roll as often as they dare.
