Animal Companion and Ferocity

Is the animals Ferocity "1d4" / "2d4" or the result of 1d4/ 2d4?

We're going to try to make it clearer. Ferocity is added to damage, so those are bonus damage dice. You roll them when you do damage.

That's what I thought however a player thought differently and so that would mean the animal only has 1 or 2 strengths?

Yes! That's not clear at all right now. They have a number of strengths equal to the number of dice in ferocity.

What about something like in the base options list Ferocity 1/Ferocity 2

Then when you talk about adding Ferocity to damage say something like "add Ferocity d4 to your damage"
