Apocalypse World / Re: Fundamental scarcities/impulses underlying the Child-Thing
« Last post by Munin on July 13, 2020, 08:52:18 PM »
IMO, the Child-Thing is very much a creature of the maelstrom. It's fundamental scarcity/impulse stems from its desire to understand the human condition. To blend in. To belong. But it is so alien that that understanding and belonging may be unattainable.

If you want to keep the Child-Thing connected to the other PCs, lean into the idea that "the maelstroms's wolves are hunting you" by making the maelstrom's wolves just really not good for anyone. In some sense, having the Child-Thing in your game is a perfect excuse to add as much of a supernatural element to the setting as you like.

Apocalypse World / Fundamental scarcities/impulses underlying the Child-Thing
« Last post by thenewflesh on July 11, 2020, 07:55:39 PM »
For most of the playbooks, it's kind of clear what scarcities and impulses drive the characters: the Skinner is fueled by his beauty and fragility; the Driver, by her need for freedom; the Hocus, by their cult; etc. The Child-Thing seems kind of different: it's weird like the Brainer, but doesn't have the same access to the abyss of the human mind that the Brainer does.

To put it another way, most playbooks are set up in such a way as to be immediately relevant to the lives of the other PCs, but the Child-Thing seems to face inward to some extent.

How should I think about the Child-Thing and the group dynamics it incurs?

I ask this because one of my players has made a Child-Thing, and I'm worried about it being marginalized in the human politics. (Nobody has chosen to be a Wolf of the Maelstrom, if that matters.)

brainstorming & development / Re: Daydreaming about Cyberpunk A.W.

Looks fun. It's hard to comment more.

There might be bits in Cyber Peripherals you can mine, but I admit it ended up with too many moving parts for my taste - regrounding favours in barter the way you have seems neater.

brainstorming & development / Daydreaming about Cyberpunk A.W.
« Last post by Judd on July 02, 2020, 12:41:49 PM »
I've been thinking out loud about using AW Burned Over to play Cyberpunk. I know there are other games that do this but I dig AW and think it can juuuust about do this out of the box.

I've got this strange Cyberpunk Nurse Asynchronous Video Play by Post game going with Daniel and it is fun. Hot damn...Burned Over. Dag, it is good.

And now I'm daydreaming about what this would look like as a finished product.

A supplement to Burned Over? A re-written AW with Burned Over playbooks?

I'd want essays from folks about gender, race, afrofuturistic cyberpunk, UX design in the near future and maybe something about hacking in games and media. I picture 3000 word essays at 15 cents a word. I've got people in mind. This daydream is specific.

And that is where I'm at. I just learned that this forum was back up, which brings me great joy and thought I'd share these thoughts.

Questions, warnings, cheers, hugs, and critique are welcome...

Sure thing!

Somewhere in the document, if you would, please say something like "the threat map from Apocalypse World is ?2016 by Meguey Baker & D. Vincent Baker, used with permission."

Thanks!

lumpley, would it be ok if I include a copy of the AW2e threat map example  in the skeleton world document?

It's a lovely visual approach to notes that I've not seen elsewhere.

I'm not quite finished yet, but I'm getting there. Thanks so much, I'll definitely shoot you an email when I'm ready!

Looking forward to seeing it. Let me know if you need a playtester

First pass at 'ideas for structure and content' for the  equipment and GM help sections added.

Not happy with it yet, but there's do much variance between games I'm not sure anyone is sure.

I do need to figure out the pattern between threat types and game theme still.

Feedback as ever appriciated.

Goblin World / Re: Where to start with Goblin World
« Last post by wightbred on June 19, 2020, 10:32:42 PM »
Goblin World (and Number Appearing) was written to question the assumption that ?monstrous races? were always evil or unplayable.

I want to continue to encourage players to put aside their assumptions and limits of what character they can play and to explore new horizons.

However, the language I used in writing Goblin World perpetuates racial stereotypes in a way that does not reflect my core beliefs.

I apologise if my work has offended anyone, or contributed in any way to creating or spreading prejudice.

As the author I have decided to remove this title until I have the time and capability to revise and make it what it needs to be. I may also remove the threads containing rules from this forum in future.

I am proud of the artists who contributed to this work. My decision is not intended to reflect on their artwork, or on the Dungeon World game.

If you have concerns, questions or comments, please reach out to me here or at @ Wightbred on Twitter.

Goblin World / Re: New Version: Backstabbed by an Extortionist

Yes I am.

There are extensive discussions going on about race in roleplaying in the community right now in parallel to the Black Lives Matter movement, which has caused me to re-evaluate my old games from a new perspective.

Lots of great information about this on Twitter and other forums, and the discussions have lead to a response by Wizards of the Coast about the current version of Dungeons and Dragons: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/diversity-and-dnd
