blood & guts / Re: The Adaptability of AW
« on: June 17, 2010, 03:56:14 AM »
I think you're absolutely right. Character kits, apocalyptica, scarcity, that's all just Vx's bloody fingerprints. Moves, principles and agenda are the only thing about the game that's solid. And goddamn it's so solid it's a golden sphere encrusted with diamonds, with a core of adamantium. Everything else is leaves in the wind. Ok, you also have Fronts but Fronts are a way to organize threats and threats are just a category of moves, when you get down to it.

Moves are hackable by themselves, out of the book. Pick a piece of fiction you're interested in, make a move around it. Principles are just a list. Change the list, change the game. The agenda should probably stay as it is, because man I'm not sure anyone wants to tinker with that. Those are your tools, what you're going to do with them?

The very fact that so many people are working on so many hacks and adaptations even before the official release speaks for itself. I have never seen anything like this happen with any other game.

The Dragon Killer / Re: The leap
« on: June 16, 2010, 10:11:36 AM »
My guess it's like hold...you spend it to make things happen.

Loving this so far, the original Dragon Killer imagery is really powerful and coupled with the AW rules this should be awesome.

brainstorming & development / Re: eventually publishing a hack

Seeing how there's already a ton of hack in the works, a lot of them by great designers, how about collecting a few of them once they're done and publishing them together as a sort of "official" AW splatbook?

Vanguard / Re: Rapport

Questions! Can you roll Rapport with NPCs you've just met during the course of the game? Aliens and so on? I guess it would start at -1?

I really like the emergency jump move. And I'd like to hear more about Raport and Favour, since it sounds similar to what I'm trying to do in my hack.

Good job!

Apocalypse World / Re: [custom move] reasonable??
« on: June 11, 2010, 05:16:05 AM »
I think that was the actual design intention behind the Battlebabe: she's great at stirring shit up, not so good when trouble actually starts. Maybe I'm wrong.

Then again, the Battlebabe has quite a few awesome battle moves. There's Visions of Death which allows you to basically pre-emptively decide the outcome (unless you roll a Miss). You don't need to wear armour with Impossible Reflexes. You stun people with Dangerous & Sexy and you inflict +1harm with Merciless (remember, 2 harm is enough to down most NPCs).
But the most powerful move might be Perfect Instincts. A +2 bonus is a lot in AW. Coupled with a good stat, that's +5 total, which means you can't fail, and will be probably rolling 10+. If you get three hits on a read a sitch move, that means you just got three automatic success rolls for the future (and since a PC usually acts about three times during a battle...).

I think it's worth linking to this whole thread from over on SG: http://story-games.com/forums/?CommentID=274123
It includes ideas about a western, cyberpunk, gritty fantasy, mutants, Song of Ice and Fire and other possible hacks.

Also, here's mine, it's based on the Icelandic Sagas: http://story-games.com/praxis/comments.php?DiscussionID=218&page=1#Item_1
Still in its very early stages, I probably won't finish it until I get the finished product and read the chapter about making custom moves and stuff.
