So, uh, where do we get them?  One that's not filled out with Inside Hatchet City stuff?

Apocalypse World / Re: Images of ApW
« on: July 09, 2010, 08:33:40 PM »
Like the dead eye of a white carp, the black sun stares through the haze at the rooftop islands of The Wake.  The Wake.  A massive bay of murk, water poisoned by toxins and the psychic miasma of the maelstorm that came with the End.

In the Before, here was a gleaming city full of promise, its spires raised with Promethean defiance towards the heavens.

But now it is half submerged.  Fewer than a hundred towers rise above the surface, and of these only a few as much as a hundred meters.

A few of the towers are close together and are bridged with metal and bio-cord.  The towers house Those Who Remain.

Carrier pigeons and fanboats flit between them now and then.  And pestilence.  And war.

At the south end of The Wake rises its finest tower, its least haunted ghost.  For now.

Here is Babbel.

Apocalypse World / The Cool Before The Storm

"...sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand."

Starting up an Apocalypse World campaign tonight.

Outside of 4E and opening teasers for Danger Patrol, I've been "impro-GM'ing" just about everything I run for quite a while now.  It usually goes pretty well, but I'm also usually a little nervous.

Maybe it's having seen Apocalypse World in action a few times now.  Maybe it's the people I'm playing with.  Maybe it's this infernal heatwave.

But outside of a couple apocalyptic images, I have ZERO idea what we're in for tonight and UTTER certainty that it's going to rock.

Thanks, Vincent, for this amazing game you're about to unleash upon the wider world.

I like the idea of a general Hx highlighting but my custom move is as much about encouraging interaction when it's not safe as a general call for interaction.

Highlighting Hx might serve as well, but you could have a case where Abe's Hx is highlighted and his Hx with Burroughs is -1 and his Hx with Crille is +3 where he just hangs out with Crille for the session and helps her.  I want him to be tempted to help Burroughs and have things go pear-shaped.

But yeah, the people I play with might actually be more likely to help Burroughs than Crille.  That's part of why my gaming has been so great in recent years.

I was just playing today with Christian.  Yep, still fun.  The Faceless looks really fun as well.

Yeah, that might be good.  Maybe allow one Hx highlighting per session; if a player doesn't do it, the MC has the option.  The interesting thing about that is that you're effectively saying "I want you to help or hinder this other PC during the session.  I want you to mix it up."

An alternative to my "I might regret this but..." above would of course be "help or hinder" if you didn't necessarily want to recommend a cooperative mode but did want the PCs to mix things up not only when it was relatively safe to do so.

There was that whole water problem, yeah?

I love how people lapse into swearing and/or (what I see as) Vincent-speak when they talk about Apocalypse World.  I feel like I do.  Or maybe it's just an east coast thing.  It makes me think about game rules as meme medium.  Behold the wicked awesome power of the game designer!  ;-p

This game all sounds wonderful so far.  A water supply threat is a great threat; it wants such immediate response.

I might try making that salsa for Thursday night.  It's going to be 98 here.

Please do inform us when Jesus says, "Nobody fucks with the Jesus!" yeah?

Apocalypse World / I may regret this but...

"If yah only stick yer neck out for yer brotherman, what use are yah?"
- Weaver Bird

Here's a universal custom periperhal move I intend to propose for my game starting Thursday.

I might regret this but...: If you help another character with whom your Hx is +1 or less, mark an experience circle.

Intent:

1) Additional incentive in the early game for PCs who may not know each other well to help anyway and later incentive to help not only when Hx is +2 or +3.  Missed helping rolls can drive plot.

2) My GM'ing technique tends to lead to slightly fewer rolls than some but I want character improvement to stay apace.

Apocalypse World / Re: What should I have (as MC) to play?

John - an explicit space where the MC can put what the PCs have as their current highlighted stats might be cool.  Or hot.

Apocalypse World / Re: Extended Mediography

Hmmm...  Looks like I can't edit my post above, but the song is actually called The Order Of Death which contains the refrain "This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get."

I hate not being able to edit.  It's basically the reason I've only lurked at The Forge the last seven or so years.

Hardware had a great soundtrack too I recall.  I'm going to find it again and use it.  It even includes the Story Games/Apocalypse World/Vincent anthem of advanced fuckery: "This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get."

I read The World Without Us a couple years back and AW GMs may find it useful.

My first thought when I saw Apocalypse World was, "Yea!  Vincent made Wasteland, the RPG."

Apocalypse World / Re: Who's playing who

I've played a battlebabe (Tavi) and an operator (Waters) in fun one-shots with Harper and Rigney, respectively.  But my main character is my brainer Brace.  I adore her.  Enough to subject you all to "let me tell you about my character."

http://greenland.wikidot.com/brace

Brace lives in a corner unit on the third story of the Waverly apartments.  Once grand, they look like they've been mortared into a kind of quiet acquiesence.  Her unit is missing much of the ceiling.  Its dominant features are a large pre-apoc movie projector, rows of film canisters, various army trunks and a low four poster bed.  Grimy, weathered movie posters adorn the walls: Casablanca, White Heat, Chinatown.

I did a vignette thing about her from a our first session:
http://greenland.wikidot.com/session-1

I'm trying to play her as a non-menacing brainer.  She doesn't like reading people who don't want to be read but does it reluctantly for barter from the hardholder Partridge.  Sometimes she lies to him about what she reads.  She's done it other time but rationalizes "good reasons" why.  She'll give up her million rationalizations if she can just find someone to connect with in a real way.

When she opens her mind to the psychic maelstrom it smells like burning cellophane and the visuals are of grainy, sepia colored old movies.

She just took the Angel's Healing Hands move.  I'm saying she's had it all along but the first and last time she tried it prior to now she rolled snake-eyes and hurt someone.

That's why the examples in the book of the MC or player making a mistake in play and then correcting it are so good.

I noticed and appreciated those as well.

Knife & Candle / Re: Just some content
« on: June 29, 2010, 04:07:23 PM »
I decided yesterday to do an AW conversion of the GOTHIC/ECHO game I conducted briefly as a pbp game on Snail's Pace and then some tabletop last weekend.  I'm excited about the prospect and I thought I saw a little overlap between GOTHIC/ECHO's setting (the city of Meridian) and "Knife & Candle."

So after avoiding it forever, I just joined twitter today explicitly to try out this echo bazaar thing.  You are devils.  Any warnings provided should be insufficient to clear your conscience for another echo bazaar enslaving.

Please work faster so I can get on with the thievery.

also, please friend me (or however it works) if you'd like a fellow echo bazaar traveller.

Hmmm... My Brainer's gotta get me one of those.  (I took receptivity drugs and the glove)

Thanks for the response.  It makes sense to me but I suspect these kinds of situational calls are going to make restless one or two of the more traditional players I plan to try to run AW for at some point.  I think there's enough trust there that it will be okay though.

So hanging off of a speeding semi and shooting the tire on a weaving motorcycle with a pistol is always going to be some kind of roll but maybe there's no roll for even a pistol if the fiction has the attacker having gotten the drop on their stationary target who has no cover and is maybe fifteen feet away?  Case by Case.
