AW:Dark Age / Re: Choosing Rank
« on: March 12, 2014, 01:17:59 PM »
Main mechanical issue is fortunes.

Higher rank usually equals higher amount of holdings (or whatever).
More holdings is usually the main benefit of higher rank, too.

So, when you roll fortunes, you really have three options:
- All profit
- Most profit, one want
- All want

Right? I don't have the book right in front of me but I'm pretty sure that's the breakdown.

So, it's a risk reward tradeoff.
High rank gets more profit on a success, but way more issues on a fail.
Low rank gets less profit, but very little issues on a fail.

When you factor in that you'll fail this roll 50% of the time, it can be pretty risky...

If the War-Herald is with, leading, his group I'd have him roll go to battle and use the group harm rules. Only if someone or something gets close to harming him, then I'd play that out.

If the War-Herald is sending his band off by itself, handle it according to ie. principles and so on.
I can expand on that, later, if you need.

Oh, I think it's valid as long as you approach fairly, not without warning. Give him time to react, act, think.

Also, the obvious one, the higher your rank, the harder you'll be hit when your fortunes go south!

Yeah!
I think I'll test out the original, though I might even increase it to +2 armor to really disincentivise attacking at that moment.
But if it doesn't play out well, I'll consider some alternatives.

"When you've drawn someone out, if it's a PC, as long as you have one mark, they have the Oath "I swear not to harm {your name}". If it's an NPC, they won't attack you while you have a mark."?

Not sure I'm feeling that, but I'll think it over.
How's it sound?

So the idea with Hear Me Out is just this: if you can get someone to listen to you, just for a second, they're going to hesitate at least long enough to hear what you have to say, and you can at least finish the conversation.

Originally, it was going to be that as long as you had a mark on it, you couldn't be attacked by them at all, but that would either require only working on NPCs, blocking player agency, or different rules for PCs and NPCs.

I guess... "When you've drawn someone out, as long as you have at least one mark, if they're an NPC they won't attack you, and if they're a PC, they'll need to hold steady to attack you." might work.

Oh, no need to be sorry!

The population there is the staff only, I was estimating.
It could be a bit higher, maybe up to 12 or 15, but I certainly wasn't counting i.e. patrons.

I've doubled it for now, to 12, but I'm sure I'll fiddle with the numbers a bit.

@DWeird

One thing to try is to have a second, abstract map.
Like a Venn diagram or relationship map.
Which, I think, is what I might do myself!

Hey all!

I realized there was an archetype that I didn't see represented amongst the present or todo playbooks. Someone who acts through intermediaries and pulls strings, a manipulator or kingmaker.

So, in a mad burst of inspiration, I made one!
I think the moves need a little polish, and it needs look items, but I like it a lot!

Feel free to critique, use, remix, whatever. Hope it inspires or helps someone else!

That sounds pretty alright.
Following on from that, is there really any criteria for what a good oath is?

Like, could someone be all "I swear to make you sandwiches", and then just make a sandwich every session (although, you wouldn't remark it until they clear)...

If I'm holding the door and they realize it won't break, they start to back off, that gives me a chance to either:

  • Make a break for it
  • Open the door and try to catch them by surprise
  • Shout through the door and try to make a deal
  • ...and any number of other things

Any of which a +1 could help with.

Aces! I rather like that idea.

Here's another I haven't seen elsewhere?
  • Can a player swear an oath to an NPC? I see no reason why not but I'm not sure if it'll break the game.
