Apocalypse World / Gangs & Battles
« on: August 18, 2010, 01:28:18 AM »
So we had our 3rd session tonight, and it was the best yet, but at the end we kinda muddled through some battle confusion.

We were using the optional moves for the first time, and from this gang-on-gang warfare a couple questions sprang:

1. In a Battle (with the optional countdown in play), can a gangleader use his gang as a weapon for one move and with the next move use his very favorite gun or whatever?

2. In a Battle (with the optional countdown in play), can you keep using the basic moves in addition to the Battle moves? I very much suspect the answer to this is yes, but I'm a little unsure.

3. How would you resolve this without going to the Battle moves: two gangs face off (seize by force roll), each does 1-harm to the other; people are injured, some serious. The fight ain't over, is it? I didn't know what to do in play, so I switched over to the optional battle moves and said they were at 9:00 and had two moves left. This worked great, but I'm wondering if there's something else I could have done. Hrm, I suppose I could've just used an MC move, like, "There's a momentary pause in the gunfire, and Lars levels a sawed-off at you and narrows his eyes. What do you do?" Makes sense.

Also: It's hard to stat up gangs on the fly and have the players feel the numbers are fair!

Apocalypse World / Re: Does Operator/Hardholder Barter Accumulate?
« on: August 17, 2010, 02:16:27 AM »
It generally costs one barter to heal a harm.  In one of my two games the PCs collectively took 7 harm in the first session and like 4 or 5 in the third session.  That's expensive!  They've been behind the eight ball the whole time.  Every job that earns you a barter is often going to cost you one or two barter to pull off.  I frankly don't see how the PCs ever keep up and see the opposite problem, if anything, based on the healing rules alone.  There's bribes, everyone in Apocalypse World wants their cut.  Are you certain you're playing your NPCs like real people? :)

Damn, that's good, Matthew. My Hocus player has the thing where when he's in surplus he gets +2 Barter, and he's gotten it both sessions, and he hasn't spent any, so he has like 6 barter right now. His cult hasn't come up much (he hasn't been proactive about using it and last session was all focused on this one threat), but yeah, I need to hit them harder with the barter. And that much harm? My guys are getting off easy. Damn.

Apocalypse World / Re: Opening your brain and missing
« on: August 16, 2010, 12:20:34 PM »
Since I posted this I've found it very helpful to go through the basic MC moves and jot down a little thought for every one--how might I use this one if they open their brain and miss? It was easy to come up with great stuff with time to think. I'm sure I'll use some of the things I wrote down, but really they're more for if I get stuck/ to springboard me into doing it extemporaneously.

This is one I really hope gets some use in our game:

When you shoot up, roll+cool.
On a 10+, take +1 forward on your next roll+weird. You pushed off and took it, no sweat.
On a 7-9, take +1 forward on your next roll+weird, but anything else you do, until you rest for a couple hours, is Acting Under Fire.
On a miss, man, you can't handle your shit. You pass out and wake up who the fuck knows where. Damn, aren't you missing something, too?

After reading through the Hocus stuff again, I'm just gonna tell my guy that his surplus Barter doesn't roll over every session. I mean, the surplus Violence doesn't, so why should the Barter, right? It seems the most intuitive interpretation of the rules.

Good question. I just assumed it did for the Hocus, and now my Hocus player is accumulating all kinds of wealth. I'd like to know how it's supposed to work!

Apocalypse World / Re: Thoughts after play
« on: August 13, 2010, 01:24:26 PM »
Sometimes people I play with could be a little hesitant to make their characters vulnerable- when I ask questions they arn´t in love with any one, they don´t depend on or believe in anything special- not that much anyway. They seem to want to stay in control of their characters. I´m not sure if I should adress this question or just think that they are playing their characters- who keep themselves safe in this fucking unsafe world.

I dunno, man. If I asked, "who do you depend on?" And they said "no one," I'd look at them like. Dude. Weak. To me dodging & shooting other players' ideas down like that sucks, and should be talked about. But you & your group may be different.

Another suggestion for your Hocus player: Have him read the brief Hocus intro (if he did already, ignore this suggestion) on page 98, and see if that's what he thought he was in for:

Hocuses have cult followers the way choppers have gangs. They're strange, social, public, and compelling. If you want to sway mobs, play a hocus. Warning: things are going to come looking for you. Being a cult leader means having to deal with your fucking cult.

First, you didn't cheat. Surplus doesn't just mean "Good things happen!" It means whatever happens when you have a surplus, happens. So if your guys get violent & drugged-out, then that happens and the Hocus has to fucking deal. Our first game kicked off with the Hocus in surplus and it basically ran the game: "Okay, your cult is going violence crazy, burning down the nearby shantytown--what do you do?"

Also, as far as the Hocus not being "that powerful"--in our game the Hocus player has had some problems getting things done as well, but I think it's just because he hasn't been using his strengths (uh, his cult) to get things done. Choosing to play a Hocus means wanting to have your will made manifest through others, not through your own strength (a la the Gunlugger).

And yeah man, the Driver. I haven't seen it in play nor played it, but I often wonder what a Driver looks like in play.

Nathan, have you guys played again? How did it go with the Fronts?

Apocalypse World / Re: Durrrp, let me check the MC Moves
« on: August 11, 2010, 01:36:57 PM »
I actually enjoyed getting a set of index-cards cut in half, writing each of the moves down, and then every now and then drawing a few and seeing if any spoke to me. It definitely helped get out of my habit of just using my favorite move or two over and over.

I should do that for those hojillion new front moves, too, now that I think about it.

Dude. Great idea. I have a hard time actually taking a moment during play to look at the MC sheet; I feel like people are waiting for me to talk. This is a good way to get me to actually consider the moves.

Apocalypse World / Re: The Harm Move - EVERY time?
« on: August 09, 2010, 07:56:23 PM »
In my game we always use the Harm move, and if it's Harm-0 or less we sometimes use it, dictated by if the situation seems to call for it (primarily as judged by me as MC).

Apocalypse World / Re: The Cover

What's the form factor of the book?  I am dying of curiousity.

From the un-store: The book is digest-sized (8.5” x 5.5” ), 300 pages plus a few, color cover, b&w interior.

In one of the early "This Just In From Gen Con!" episodes, Kevin was talking about how excited about AW he was, saying, "it's a big Vincent Baker game, 130 pages or so..." Boy is he gonna be surprised.

Apocalypse World / Re: Obligation Gigs: How do people get 'em?
« on: August 06, 2010, 09:52:26 PM »

Tell them the possible consequences, and ask.

"You sure you want to kill Dremmer's son? I mean, he's gonna be after you until the end of the end of days, if you do. And wouldn't that be just what you need, Mr. Operator Sir, yet another thing on your plate, if you catch my not so subtle 'this will be a new obligation gig' drift?"

Can it happen like this even if the PC's not an operator?

Man, I am really glad that the image isn't working on my computer, because I want to wait until the book shows up on my doorstep to see the cover*. I instinctively threw my hand over the screen. Why did I enter this thread?

*(as an aside, it's totally lame to preorder and then get both AW & Freemarket after people who show up at GenCon. But I know it's not Vx's or Lx's fault, so, that's just the way it is).

Cal's advice is good.

But please don't take 2 hours to set up. 15-30 minutes is plenty.

yeah, it's hard for me to understand how it could take 2 hours. Unless you're, like, playing Universalis before as world creation.
