Apocalypse World / Re: Barter Books

Everything about book bartering sounds great, but with that move, does it allow for a re-roll after a miss? Or if you fail, it means you just don't have any way to apply the knowledge it contains correctly?

PC: "I'm gonna read me this 'Advanced Brain Surgery' that Dremmer gave me for payment. *rolls* Damn."

MC: "Eventually, you realize there's not a damn thing you can use in here without a fully functional Old World hospital, years of study of the nervous system, and a Brain Wave Tricorder. Tough cookies."
-or-
MC: "It was a bust for you... but Bogs restarted your brain once, yeah? Maybe she can (help you study/roll to read it herself)?"

Apocalypse World / Re: New Playbook: The Abacus

I like the idea of a violent-type who's calculating, instead of a berserker/femme fatale type, as it fills a niche the game didn't already cover. However, the first incarnation kind of seemed too hyperfocused on violence (which would be made redundant by the Gunlugger), so some of the revisions are making me a lot more enthusiastic for this playbook.

I'm digging the Boss. The Hardholder, the Hocus, the Chopper... they all have some NPC obligation, so I think it fits really well but is also a different approach.

When you are fighting a gang and they are not sure where you are, you take damage as if though you were the gang's size.

Really seconding this. It makes the Abacus/Accountant a lot like a stealth assassin to my mind, which is also kind of filling a niche that's left open by on-the-front-lines Gunlugger and look-i'm-pretty-now-you're-dead Battlebabe.

Never done a new move before, and I admit it's a bit silly but here goes...

When you get hip, roll +trendy. On a 10+, you predict the next hot fad before everyone else. On a 7-9, you can be an early adopter, or at least ditch it before it gets stale. On a miss, you are totally out of the loop on this one.

Bailey is a milliner (hat-maker-person) who's looking to expand their store but needs some sexy new merchandise to fill the additional space. Bailey says "I call my insider Justin and tell him I'm making bunny hats. What does he think?" and the MC asks for a roll.
On a 10+, The MC might say, "Justin says he knows a big-shot designer who's about to release a line of bunny pajamas, and the hats sound very cutting-edge." Bailey makes twice as much scratch as normal when selling the popular hats!
On a 7-9, The MC might say, "He says bunny pajamas are totes hot in Onionville right now, but he's also had trouble finding a matching hat." Bailey makes about as much profit as usual, even though they just spent a bundle remodeling the shop.
On a miss, the MC might say, "Justin rambles a bit about shoes before he asks you to make a kitty hat for his niece. Everyone likes kitties, right?" Bailey asks, if they slap hard enough, will Justin feel it through the phone. The shop's future is uncertain at this time...
