Have you seen Roswell (the TV series)? (That's also where I thought your "alien" type would come in.)

Roswell starts with the heroine's life being saved by this guy with special powers who makes her swear to keep it secret, whose family of super powered Others want no involvement with humans... sound familiar yet? :)

Also: Sookie Stackhouse books (True Blood on TV), of which Twilight is a watered-down, pale YA copy.

As I've told Joe before, this hack needs a move where you build up sway by treating someone badly, then use that as a bonus when you declare that you're actually in love with them.

Yeah, if you want to play it safe once you're mad, opportunity cards usually lower your nightmares without any risks.  And sometimes they let you burn the whole place down or give you other such fun options, depending on your dream qualities :)

Apocalypse World / Re: [AP] Thoughts after MCing my second session

It sounds like it went well, and you created a PC-NPC-PC triangle, so yay! :)

The MC doesn't roll, but that just means the players roll to defend (act under fire or whatnot) when you do something indtead of you rolling to attack. There was an optional rule in DnD 3E, actually, that did the very same thing (in Unearthed Arcana, maybe), so it's not totally unusual.

Thanks for the write-up, that was fun to read.

This sounds like a lot of fun, with the system delivering the right cues in spades.

I'd love to hear more about your cousins' reactions, after they've had time to reflect on the experience. Especially vis a vis their DnD exoeriences.

It may be too late now, but from the very first paragraph:

"From this, the world's psychic maelstrom, we none of us have shelter."

Might want to delete that "we".

A Song of Ice and Fire Hack / Re: Playbooks

First of all: yay!

You definitely need a playbook for the Spider (master of spies).

I think a modular approach could work very well, too. Have moves per culture, profession, and nature, and PCs pick from those. That would allow otherwise difficult characters like wardens to be implemented.

Let me second replacing the Firefly reference with Deadwood. To me, it plays exactly like PA Deadwood.

I think down time moves reveal (i.e., create) conflicts of interest. Especially when they fail. :)

Cool stuff. Having played the previous iteration of Vanguard with you, I think this one will much more directly support what you're after.
