Apocalypse World / Re: Re-Situation Moves
« on: August 10, 2010, 03:18:56 AM »
Some that I used:

Dear Iris, please roll+sharp. On a miss, choose 2. On a 7-9, choose 1:

    * Clarion gets sick overnight, like, wicked bad.
    * Looks like Balls is buddy-buddy with Jimenez now, and he's giving you the stinkeye.
    * You think you saw Raven and Billionare in Willis' house just now. They didn't look real happy, either.

On a hit, hey, you know which way Monk went, 'cause you can just sense the bastard.
Love and kisses, your MC.

For context: Clarion is Iris' new girlfriend, Balls was humiliated by Iris, Jimenez is the Danny Trejo lookalike badass, and Raven and Billionare were both killed by Iris' blunders.

Dear Kim, please roll+hot. On a miss, choose 2. On a 7-9, choose 1:

    * Spiderman ain't lookin' like he wants you anymore.
    * Somebody finds Sausage dead a ways off, by the side of the road.
    * The gear that Sausage brought you turns out to be defective. Get rid of it, or take your chances next time you use it.

On a hit (7+), I'll tell you who Spiderman's dad wants revenge on, even though you probably won't like it.

Love and kisses, your MC.

For context: Spiderman is a hardholder who was paying her for sex, Sausage traded her medical gear for sex, and found out some secret info from her that somebody else wants pretty bad. Spiderman's dad is a ghost, and Kim can only see him when she's having sex.

Apocalypse World / Re: Battle rolls - Am I doing it right?
« on: August 10, 2010, 02:54:17 AM »
If you want to run away, and nobody is trying to stop you, and nobody's shooting at you at that moment, that's not a move, you just run off.

If somebody is shooting at you, you are acting under fire, roll+cool to avoid the danger. If what you are trying to do is not otherwise a move, it's just acting under fire. If what you want to do is also a move, you are making two moves: acting under fire and the move you want to make.

Same if another PC manipulates you to not attack them, and you're acting under fire if you do. Then if you do attack them, you're acting under fire and going aggro (or seizing by force).

If you need to use violence in order to escape, you're going aggro or seizing by force. If you're using force against somebody who is fighting back, that's seizing by force, with no acting under fire. If a third party is attacking you, then you'd probably also be acting under fire.

If you're taking cover or running away, it's acting under fire. You need 10+ to not get shot, but only 7+ to actually take cover or run away.

You can also use stay the fuck down (p 213) for taking cover.

Abstaining Vampire.
For Edward, it's all about "Gain 1 String when you deny someone sexually."

I dunno man, sounds like bullshit to me. If he's the only one driving the abstinence, why hasn't she fucked the werewolf dude? I think the dudes get to mark experience when she wants them, so they can defeat the other vampires etc, but they've seen Buffy so they know what happens if they go all the way.

Also, you're probably right that it might be better to get some feedback on your mechanics from somebody who actually knows anything at all about the source material, or has seen a full episode of Buffy at the every least, but it seems they just want to tell you to stop watching Twilight.

425
I think there's a special move that lets you take strings against someone instead of wounding them, when you Seize By Force.

This move is called Edward, right?

426
That's a scene-level move.

Disagree.

Winning someone's heart is a result. Trying to win someone's heart is striving for a result. For this to be a move with action-level resolution, it requires you to take action, which is why I added "demonstrate you interest" in my post, btw.

But trying to win someone's heart can be combined with any of the AW basic moves, and be an additional result of that move. You can do pretty much any old thing and say you're doing it to win someone's heart. That result comes at the scene level -- you perform whatever actions, and if you are trying to win a heart, that's what the scene is about.

Same as when you go into battle and you roll+weird in order to say one person who lives and one person who dies. That's scene-level resolution.

When do you roll+sway to win someone's heart? Anytime you're doing something to win their heart? I can rack up 9 strings in one scene. Do you roll at the beginning of the scene and hold those strings for the scene? Do you roll at the end of the scene, to determine whether or not you are successful?

And if you can only roll once per scene or situation, then absolutely it's scene-level, because the whole scene revolves around that roll. What is more important than winning somebody's heart? Nuffin.

Also, clearly (I mean, OBvioulsy, duh!) the sex move that Buffy has, and one of them Twilightors, prolly the chick, has is this:

Monstor-Fukkarrz!

The first time you and another character have sex, they turn evil overnight! Like they are possessed by some evil demon, they totally act like an asshole and a douche and they don't like you anymore and they try to kill you! I mean, like OMGWTFCIA!?!!!1!

428
Joe, shame on you! You are making that terribly-cliched rookie AW-hacker mistake that is all too common amongst rookie AW-hackers!

That's a scene-level move.

So, what, you just waltz in, bat your pretty lashes and pout, and BAM! Three strings, her heart is all yours, do what you will? No, no, no! When does that EVER happen to a PC in your source fiction?

You have to build it up one move and one string at a time. Like this:

When you try to win someone's heart, demonstrate your interest and roll+sway*
6 or less: You are disgusting! Eww, you creepy stalker!
7-9: You can get one string if you live up to it.
10+: You get one string, even if you ARE a creepy stalker!

So probably you have to live up to it, which might be another roll. But once you get that one string, you can use it to maneuver your lover-to-be into a situation where you get a bonus! And you tie another string to her heart, and then another, and another.

Maybe on a 12+ you can get two strings, but really 3 is too much. Unless maybe there are a bunch of easy ways that you can get rid of strings.

And if you really, really think 1 is too few, maybe there are ways to pull on those strings without losing them, hm? Or a move where you get an extra string, because you are sooo sexxxy that you even sparkle in the sunlight!

*What are your other stats? Shimmy, Shake, and Shout it Out Loud?

Apocalypse World / Re: AW illustrations / photo manipulation
« on: July 25, 2010, 11:37:35 PM »
Many of the pictures I used in our last game had that AW two-colour feel to them.

I made them all back in the 90s like this: I take a picture and photocopy it. Then I put another piece of paper over top and a light under my glass table, and I trace out sections of black. Then I colour them in. And done.

You can also use the Artistic > Cutout filter for a similar effect.

Apocalypse World / Can I choose which stat to use?
« on: July 23, 2010, 09:33:16 PM »
Vincent, I'd like to play the rules as written before I start hacking it, but some of the wording is ambiguous.

The Angel move Professional compassion says "you can choose to roll+sharp instead of roll+Hx when you help someone..." while the move Sixth sense says "when you open your brain to the world's psychic maelstrom, roll+sharp instead of roll+weird" (no hint of choose there).

Does that mean I can't ever roll+weird for the psychic maelstrom? Does that move always come into effect because I am opening my brain?

Or is it a case of to do it, you have to do it, and dependent on me using some sort of sixth sense in the fiction, and if, for example, a machine opens my brain and projects the psychic maelstrom into it, I would roll+weird?

Can I choose whether or not to use Sixth sense as I see fit?

Is there a concrete answer or am I (we) supposed to decide during play?

If you aren't Vincent: I just want to know what the text means, I don't need suggestions on what I should do.

Thanks.

Apocalypse World / Re: Stat Substitution Glitch

It's a dick move if the stat substitution is mandatory, and the MC has not introduced any custom moves that use that stat. In that case, you have no options that use the highlighted stat.

Hey Vincent, is it cool to opt NOT to use your stat substitution move on a specific roll? Like, "This time, I'm not Ice Cold, actually. I'm yelling, my face is red, I'm gonna roll+hard."

Or are the special moves mandatory and always on?
