AW:Dark Age / Re: Playtest concerns and questions

-Can I use war parties against trolls? How would I go about that?
I certainly would not recommend single combat with a troll! Make your war party, treat the troll as an opposing war party.

What does that mean for the Troll-Killer?

IIRC, you can make one as part of your stronghold, or you household, or both.

Well, hotdamn, Johnstone!  You're so good at pushing my buttons, I think I'll have to run this game!

...I replied with a nasty gesture reminding him that I had 4 points of armor (armor, helmet, shield)...

Not that it would have mattered in this instance, but isn't armor, helmet, shield 3 armor?

AW:Dark Age / Re: Where Do Rights Come From?
« on: September 10, 2014, 10:53:08 PM »
Quote
The only thing is, when the right is denied, that support and respect is more or less ignored.  This happens in the fiction—the usurper dismissing the lord's proper place—but it also occurs mechanically—the people who recognized you as their proper lord are suddenly looking the other way and making embarrassed coughing noises. All the support and respect implied by the fictional positioning is revealed as completely useless and ineffective.  Which seems weird.

Well, yes, that would be weird.  I don't think when a right is denied it is denied by everyone.  The rebel denies the Liege Lord's right, but why would that mean his supporters, do too?

Quote
Which got us to thinking—what if rights are specifically bestowed by their domains?  When they are denied, the "gods are angry" option is replaced by "the bestowing domain is angry."  So if you trample on the ancestral right and title to rule a stronghold, the ruler might declare that the people are revolting against the usurper's misrule.  If you disrupt somebody's good investments, then the Wider World gets angry at you for disrupting trade.  If your right to lead worshipers gets denied by your domineering liege lord, the Old Ways might surface to teach him a lesson in respect and humility.  If you prevent your war-leader from sending out scouts, War gets angry with you, which doesn't bode well for the battle you're about to fight.

This also puts a little more flavor into the fiction, so not just the gods get angry at the abused rights, but the Land Itself and the Other World and all sorts of juicy goodness.

It seems to me you are creating gods for the domains, one or more, for each, and I like it.  They might be powerful spirits or demi-gods, thus allowing for a great and jealous monotheistic god, and pantheons rich with many greater and lesser gods, or they might be the only true gods, which could be worshiped in divergent ways among many different peoples.

AW:Dark Age / Re: Right to call upon god or gods for the Court Wizard?

Yeah, actually, I believe you are right.  I saw your post in the other thread and took another look at the rules.  As you quoted, it does say "You can perform any enchantment, at any time you choose to do so," and gives details how.  So, yeah, it looks like you might get burned at the stake for doing that when you ought not be!

Thanks, nomadzophiel!

That's some thought provoking discourse right there!

EDIT:  It makes me reconsider my comment in this thread about attempting 'magic' without the Right.

While Kill for the Greater Good is obviously a locally given right, I don't think the Right to Consult The Other World is something given on this world.  I think attempting that that without the Right would be more akin to praying to a god that just doesn't listen to you.

I'm sure there could be scenarios made where those are not true, but they seem like the most plausible takes to me.

We're just getting started.  I expect the MC will ask the Lowen characters that question very soon!

I do all my gaming via PbP, mostly on RPG.net, and would be willing to MC if one is needed.  I'll drop a note to Lumpley to see if he minds. I've run AW previously online and it was cool!

We've got players organized and excited on GotEXP right now and we need MCs!  If you come, we're ready to go.

plausiblefabulist, I hope you'll join us there, too!

E_FD, Vincent hasn't pulled the plug, yet, so we should be alright.  Also, GotEXP is pretty small.

Vondas, the wonderful thing about forums is if you need more, you just make more.  We've gotten such a great response, we're breaking it into 2 games; we'll make it 3 if we have to.  So, by all means, join in!

AW:Dark Age / Re: Denied right
« on: September 03, 2014, 11:45:27 PM »
I see Denied Right as a move clarifying the fiction.  In effect, it's a prompt, which ought to help us create interesting situations when (not if) our Rights are denied.

Consider these examples of recourse:

— You have the right to a boon granted, unbegrudged, within your hostess’ power and honor.

— You have the right to confront your betters for justice. When you do, treat it as winning them over, but roll
Strong instead of Good.

— You have the right to write your betters for aid. When you do, treat it as mustering warriors from among
them, but roll Wary instead of Bold.

— You have the right to command others’ assistance, at your word, wherever you go.

— You have the right to demand and require someone to bring themselves forth to appear before you.

— You have the right to give justice to the people within your holding and your protection.

— You have the right to impose law on the villages under the stronghold’s protection.

— You have the right to slay whom you must for the protection of all.

The move is forcing your hand, forcing you to state your intentions.  I would hope that would set things into blessed motion!
