Apocalypse World / Organizing NPCs
« on: August 27, 2010, 02:39:46 AM »
Goldie's got her chopper gang of Diamond, Lars, Stinky, Donny, Wires, Spade, Fleece, Penny, and about 5-6 others.

JC has his crew of Tum-Tum, Amy, Patch, and Rice.  He also has gathered followers, about 20 of them, all named.

Lemieux has his security detail of Hobbs, Maple, Sable, Pang, and about 10 others.

Then there's the Roverville people, who consist of Swing, Monk, and about 40 others.

The number of NPCs is getting rather crowded.  So I wanted to get some ideas on how to effectively organize NPCs, so that I can remember who is who.  How do you organize your NPCs in Apocalypse World?  What methods do you do to keep them straight in your head, or on paper, or on a laptop, or wherever?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Apocalypse World / AP: An Angel, a Driver, and an Ambulance
« on: August 17, 2010, 11:17:46 AM »
I got a chance to play with my roommates this weekend.  Chris played Shelby, a Driver with a Battered Ambulance, and a combat dune buggy strapped to it's roof.  Lisa played the Doc, an Angel who rode with Shelby.

The two of them made a yearly circuit across the old Trans-Canada in the scorching summers, and then south along the crumbling I-5 in the winters. At each holding the Doc would ply her trade, and the Driver kept her moving onto the next holding.

They established that they'd done this for almost 5 years, surviving the awfulness of the lawless highways to bring a little bit of good to each location.  The Doc would bring not only healing but learning, training people in each holding to hold a bit of information on things like hygiene and nutrition.

They also brought in CB radios, which was new and interesting.  They broadcasted on channel 9, and those holdings with a radio would call in if they needed assistance. I made one of the future fronts all based on threats coming in on the CB radio, everything from ravings of a Hive-Mother who's voice on channel 5 hypnotized those that listened in their sleep, to a guy that used a wide gain antenna to play old music on channel 22. I also used the CB as a way for them to hear the bickering between holdings, announcing some off screen badness.

The Doc used the modern Hippocratic Oath as her moral compass. By the way, that oath has some really fantastic lines.  here's one:

"Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given to me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God."

Considering she took healing hands, it is difficult for the people of the holding to NOT see her as a God.

After playing a bit through the first session, I had enough to know what they were kind of looking for.  I put together a front and a few threats, and then off we went!

At one holding they had to deal with a group of sick kids (put them into a spot). The bites they had on their feet and ankles (future badness) led them to discover an infestation of cockroaches in the holding, aggressive ones about the size of a man's fist.  (this was a landscape threat move from the lake, a breeding pit)

I had a great scene of them squirming out of all the old drains in a locker room (the holding was in an abandoned high school), deforming their shape to get through the small pipes.

There was a really neat moment of the Doc opening her mind to the maelstrom, where she saw through the eyes of the cockroaches, and saw that they were being bred near a nearby algae infested lake.  The breeder was a rather unscrupulous bar owner, who blended the cockroaches into a delicious juice that the holding adults purchased as booze, and she watched the breeder through a thousand segmented eyes feeding the bugs human flesh.  (Announce off screen badness)

The bugs had a taste for people now, and those that escaped his breeding pit were multiplying in the old sewers under the holding, and biting down on the smaller, weaker children.

After some rolls, the Doc figures out the cure for the sickness, the bug juice itself.  "The source is also the cure!" It also explained why the adults, who drank the stuff, weren't getting sick. Of course, we were talking about BLENDED Cockroach. (Barfing... literally... forth apocalyptia, present an opportunity and then ask)

Shelby and the Doc proceeded to try to stop the bar owner and his goons. (They were family Brutes, so they closed ranks) That ended in violence, and during the fight the the Doc killed the boss (I presented her an opportunity and then asked), and Shelby took down the rest. Their blood attracted the the bugs, who swarmed the corpses, forming this living carpet of crawling bugs. They quickly took several bottles of the bug juice and burned their way out of the bar, destroying many of the cockroaches in the process.

They re-labeled the bug juice as "medicine" and prescribed the kids a few spoonfuls each day, to stave off any further sickness.

"Plus, it's good protein.  What?" said the Doc, always practical, while Shelby gagged.

It was a great session, and they're both excited to play again.  The Angel and a Driver is a great pairing.  Plus "Shelby and the Doc" sound like an old 80's TV show.

Apocalypse World / A Scientist talks Food Preservation
« on: August 16, 2010, 02:07:33 AM »
I was wondering if my scavenging players would find any food out there in the Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland.  I decided that I wanted to get a little bit of Science on what would happen in 50 years, in my ongoing efforts to "Make Apocalypse World Seem Real".

So I spoke to my good friend Doctor Alexander Gill, a Research Scientist for Health Canada.  His doctorate was on Food Microbiology, and he had quite a bit to say on the subject!  I just wish I could get him to sit down and play, but he's way off in Ottawa, several hundred Kilometers from where I live in Winnipeg.

If you have any questions for Dr. Gill, please ask in the thread, and I'll see if he can come by to answer.

At any rate, this is what the good Doctor has to say.  Many thanks to Dr. Gill for some great background on this topic!

-------
There are two aspects to the preservation of food, safety and spoilage. Safety is the presence of toxins or infectious organism which can cause illness, whereas spoilage is changes in the taste, smell or texture of food that effect its palpability. Spoilage can occur as a consequence of the growth of bacteria or fungi on the food (rotting) or due to physical/chemical changes (drying out, enzymatic changes).

It is important to note that there is no direct link between the safety and spoilage of foods. Spoilage of foods occurs when the bacteria and fungi grow to high enough numbers on the food (greater than 100,000 cells per gram) that the breakdown of the food and waste products they produce are noticeable. The bacteria, fungi and viruses which cause illness are not often present on foods and at low numbers (less than 100 cells per gram), numbers too low to have effects observable by human senses. Thus food may be unspoiled and unsafe or spoiled but safe to eat. The organism that do cause illness can be killed by heating, so cooking food is a great way to make it safe.

The following is short summary of storage methods for foods and the expected effects of long time storage. The success of any of these methods depends on the environment they are stored and packaging remaining intact. In general the probability of stability with long term storage will be increased if stored somewhere dry, cool and unexposed to light.

1. Drying – Microorganisms can not grow without the presence of free water. Many foods are preserved by having water content that is too low for microorganisms to grow. Examples include: grains, rice, flour, sugar, nuts, seeds, dry pasta. These types of foods will remain edible indefinitely as long as they are kept somewhere dry and cool. Archaeologists have recovered grains and noodles from buried stores after thousands of years.

An important note on the safety, stored grains that become damp can support the growth of toxin producing fungi such as ergot and fusarium.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergot
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusarium

The free water in a food can also be lowered by drying or the addition of salt or sugar to bind up the water in chemical bonds. Examples include: dried meat, salted fish, smoked meat, salami, hard cheese, jam, chocolate, dried fruit, Twinkies. These foods are less stable as they are finely balanced between too much or not enough water, but are stable for a few years of storage. These types of foods will also be more prone to changes in texture and taste over storage due to physical/chemical changes.

2. Fermentation - In some cases the growth of bacteria or fungi causes desirable changes in the food in which case it is refereed to as fermentation. Fermentations are traditionally used to increase the acidity or alcohol content of foods to reserve them by preventing the growth of organism that are sensitive to acids or alcohol. Cheese, yogurt, salami and pickles are examples of using acid production to preserve foods. Beer and wine are examples of using an alcohol fermentation to preserve vegetable foods (grains, grapes). Many fermented foods are rich in vitamin C and so are an excellent means of protecting against scurvy. Fermented foods can remain stable for a number of years, but not decades.

3. Freezing. The power may be off in Post-Apocolyptia but in the right climate plenty of frozen food might be around. The important thing is that the food never became warm enough to thaw out. Food will remain edible indefinitely when frozen but will become mushy from over prolonged storage as the cellular structure breaks down, or it may dry out due to evaporation (freezer burn). Edible meat over 10,000 years old has been recovered from the Siberian permafrost.

4. Canning. Metal cans, glass jars or foil packs (military meals ready to eat). Canning works by cooking the food in sealed container to kill all microorganisms and preventing re-contamination. Canned food will be safe indefinitely as long as the packaging remains intact. It will undergo enzymatic and physical changes and would probably not be so appetizing after 50 years, but still safe! The big danger with damaged or under heated cans is that they can be a source of botulinum poisoning. Clostridium botulinum can not grow in the presence of oxygen, but cans provide a low oxygen environment. Clostridia spores may survive mild heating, grow in intact cans or contaminate a dented or rusted can, whose seal is broken.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clostridium_botulinum

It should be noted that the labels on cans are less durable than the cans it self. There is then the comedic potential of players finding a stash of cans the labels decades gone. Forcing the players make some dodgy culinary choices. Chunky Marrow any one…

All of these forms preservation are a potential source of pre-apocalypse food for scavenging characters but they are also all traditional forms of storage. In the past fermented and dried foods were very important as a way of preserving surplus food from one year to the next or allowing the transport of foods over long distances (dried Cod). These technologies could be very important to a post-apocalyptic community.

General Reading

As a general resource on the ecological consequences of the end of human civilization I would highly recommend "The World Without Us" Alan Weisman (www.worldwithoutus.com). It addresses an interesting set of questions about what materials are durable and what happens to the structures we build when we stop maintaining them.

Jared Diamond's book "Collapse" and Ronald Wright’s “A Short History of Progress” are excellent studies of how societies stop functioning and fail.

The Black Death, Post Roman Empire Europe and Spanish contact America are also good topics to read up on for the social impacts of social breakdown and depopulation. The Black Death killed 30-50% of the population of Europe in a couple of years, the population took until the 18th century to return to the same levels. One consequence was that workers, particularly skilled workers became more valuable. Post Roman Europe saw a dramatic loss of technical skills and literacy. In the post-Contact Americas the native population declined massively due primarily to Eurasian diseases (small pox, influenza). Estimates range around the 90% mark. This resulted in tremendous social dislocation, the effects of which are unfortunately still visible today.

Apocalypse World / AP: Gamma Road
« on: August 02, 2010, 03:51:31 AM »
I'm buzzing from excitement after an Apocalypse world I ran this evening.

This game was with a different group than my Hatchet City game, and in this case we had started the game with the first session rules.  I was still a little unsteady on my feet, but I was able to get the first session sheet filled out with information.

The first session was run a week earlier. I had Colin, who played JC the Operator.  Aaron, who played Navarre the Gunlugger, and Kyle, who played Lemieux the Savvyhead.

I found the first session a bit tricky, but just kept asking questions.  Why did Navarre decide to conceal their gender?  Where did Lemieux get his knowledge of how to fix things?  Where did JC get his postcards from?

The questions allowed me to paint a picture to the world.  From JC's past entanglements with a woman, that was sold into slavery, we created Dremmer's Deliveries, a Slaver who's gangs of "collectors" snatched stragglers from the different hard holds.

Dremmer was a second in command to President Hugo, who killed Navarre's uncle and scarred Navarre's face. Navarre's full face helmet being the result, which also hid the gender of Navarre from others.

We found out that Lemieux scavenged his van from a museum of old Television props.  His van was the original A-Team van, from the series.

It was in this van that we started the game, driving East along the Gamma Highway.  We talked about where this Highway was, and we decided that it was one of the East-West directional Interstates, somewhere in California.

They arrived at a fallen bridge, and began to try and cross. I didn't have any fronts, so I just kept to the moves on the MC list. After a failed "read a situation move"  I had a small group at the other side of the bridge take potshots at them with a hunting rifle.

Navarre got shot but a thick armor absorbed the shot quite easily, the low harm roll doing the rest. Navarre then fired a sniper rifle back, (Take something by force) turning the shooter into chutney. Three others stood up and ran at Navarre, closing the distance before he could bring his gun to bear.  (activating the stuff's downside)

JC tried to stop hostilities, manipulating the situation, and calling for a ceasefire and talk.  He managed to (Manipulating) and convinced them to let his crew pass in exchange for a piece of barter (make them buy).

From there, they headed up and over to the settlement.

So I put up Rover Ville, a small convoy of old RVs, descendents of an RV park who banded together for safety.  The original 40 RVs shrank over the decades to a lonely 5 heavily patched and modified vehicles.  They travelled from place to place, never staying longer than needed.

They entered and met with Amy, the techic, Monk, the security for King Millions, and King Millions, the massively obsese leader of Roverville.  JC made some deals with Millions (Manipulate) to protect the caravan against raiders (announce future badness).

He made a second deal to help Amy out with her tech, and Amy invited JC out for dinner.  (Separate Them)

Meanwhile, Lemieux and Navarre found an ancient service station, the parking lot of which being where Rover Ville had set up camp.  The ground floor was a skeletal ruin, but the subbasement was never opened. The two of them eagerly opened up the subbasement and ventured into the waist deep water in the lower level.  (Offer an opportunity)

A massive crayfish rose out of the water and attacked Navarre, and I kept cutting between Navarre and Lemieux's grim struggle for survival with Amy and JC's christmas light lit dinner. It was great! Navarre proved to be an incredible killing force, taking t

By the end, we established thtrough Amy's dinner that while Millions was  beloved by the people, Monk did much of the work.  Monk resented Millions, but wasn't leadership manterial, nor did he want the job.

JC ended up having sex with Amy, gaining an obligation gig with her. Afterwards he shows her his postcards, insisting these are real places that are beautiful place to settle down, pointing especially to a place called "The Florida Keys".

After besting the crayfish, Navarre and Lemiux found a few barter worth of spare parts.  They wanted to sneak it onto the van without the city noticing (acting under fire) and ended up blowing the roll (Put someone in a Spot) as the van drives over and rips out several cable plugins, plunging the whole camp into darkness.

Lemieux attempts to fix the broken connection quickly (acting under fire) and blows the roll, electrocuting himself (Inflict Harm).  The harm roll was a 10, so I picked that he was knocked right out.  Navarre quickly puts Lemiuex into the van and attempts to heal the damage, and bring him to wakefulness.

A +stock roll later (Navarre has prepared for the Inevitable), Lemieux was on the mend and awake.

Navarre attempted to calm the camp, JC assisting.  (Manipulate).  They get the camp calmed down, blaming the jumpy generator, but promise to keep a close watch on the area.  (Promise in exchange)

We ended there.  I was pleased with the game, and had some things written down to turn into fronts. Dremmer, Hugo, Gamma Road, Rover Ville all seemed like possible threats to hammer down into fronts.

I'll post what I did with Fronts, and how I figured them out, in a couple of hours.  Then, I'll post tonight's second session, where all that front prep did super awesome stuff ot the game. But now, I sleep!

Apocalypse World / Hatchet City with my group, and my Dad
« on: July 29, 2010, 02:28:33 AM »
I've been Roleplaying for 25 years now, and my parents kind of looked on.  They never quite understood what I was doing, but liked that i was reading and writing with the game, and safely at home rather than out in the streets.

Tonight, my Dad played with me.  And played Apocalypse world, of all things.

I took Hatchet city as a demo to my gaming group, which consisted of my brother Dan, my friends Dave and Wes, and my Dad.  Dad happened to be over at my brother's during game night, and decided to join in.

As I handed out the playbooks for Hatchet City, Dad picked up the Skinner.  As he flipped throught the playbooks, he started smiling, and began circling the various bits as I explained how creation went.

And so was born Icicle, the Skinner.  Blue eyes, creamy skin, dressed in luxe wear. Interested in her own pleasure, looking for a leg up, and prepared to use her knockout body to get it.  "She's a bit of a slut, but only to get her ahead. She's in love with Charming the Brainer, but for her, love's pretty temporary.  She already has her sights on the leader of Hatchet City."

My Dad has never played an RPG before.  Not once.  And from flipping through the playbook, his character comes to life. It was really awesome to see him get right into the game.

When we talked about Addergrease, Dad talked about Icicle meeting him.  Dad mentions his hairy biker body, his ugly scarred face, his ear half bitten off in some fight.  And how Addergrease thought of himself as a sophisticate, drinking rotgut out of a fine china cup, pinky in the air.

My Dad was coming up with this.  It was great, I was literally entranced while this was happening.  My Dad!

Dave, who played Charming the Brainer, really got a lot out of the Deep Brain scan and the Reading a person.  A couple of great rolls got him all kinds of information, each piece leading to more complication and trouble. The way he'd take his gloved hand to lightly touch people was subtle and great.

Wes knocked things out of the park with Di, the Angel.  The gender was never established, and Wes skillfully played up a nasally accent that kept people guessing.

And my brother Dan played Marko, the Hardholder.  We established that Marko, Di, Icicle and Addergrease were a group a long time ago, but things got ugly when Marko and Addergrease disagreed on who should be in charge of the Fledgling Hatchet City.  The ensuing fight left Marko without a working left eye, but victorious.

The fact that Marko and Icicle were old flames came up as well, but any awkwardness that might have come from that (My Dad and brother Dan were plaing these characters, remember!) vanished from the skillfull way my Dad roleplayed it. It was logical from the discussion, and they both went for it.  Plus it was hilarious how they both played it up.

Dan imagined Hatchet City in a Baseball stadium, his throne room in one of the opulent skyboxes.  The people had a market on the green, and slept in makeshift huts made from the wooden bleachers.  There was a suggestion that "Hatchet" came from something about the team's iconography, and it was possible that this was the Atlanta Braves home stadium.  We kept it fairly vague, but from then on we had various locations riffing off of a stadium idea.  The Visiting Team Locker room was turned into a prison, for example.

There's several great moments.  I got Brimful to demand to see his injured Daughter, Rather, resting in the infirmary.  He also wanted to have her patched up free of charge, due to his service of providing the city with "delicous" mud fish.  (This was a move from the Brutes - Demand Consideration or Indulgence).  Marko played this up great a demand for him to cut all trade with Addergrease, adding in a few threats like: "Your daughter is fine, and being treated well.  If you continue to disrespect me, she will not be.")

There was another moment of pure hilarity, where Icicle tries to manipulate Di into agreeing to suspend the quarantine on the more questionable fish. (Used another move from Brimful - Ask for help) Marko helps out the roll by offering an evening in his private Skybox, a comfortable place to "continue the conversation".

Icicle rolls huge, and Di goes for it, relaxing the quarantine and letting the "B" grade fish into the market. But because Wes played Di as rather asexual, it led to a brief scene of the skybox, where Di snacked on an ancient pack of twizzlers (crunch crunch) and looking a little bored, while off screen Icicle and Marko were "entertaining" each other.  (We all had a good laugh over this turn of events)

All in all, everyone had a great time, and we were all laughing and enjoying the strange world we had created.  All the players were raring for another session, and though we were just sort of playing this between Dresden Files games, this one just might usurp Dresden Files for a few months.

In addition, this night has a warm place in my heart, because tonight, I role played with my Dad.  And that's pretty damn cool.
