Freebooting Venus / Stealth and "forcing locks, easing doors, etc."
« on: December 07, 2015, 12:33:17 PM »
Stealth is described as "The skills of moving silently, forcing locks, easing doors, keeping still in hiding, and creeping up on people." Is that just color text, or does it add a new capability to the Intrude Somewhere move?

To put the question another way, can someone pick a lock just by making the Intrude Somewhere move, or is that application of Intrude Somewhere "unlocked" by taking the Stealth skill?

What about picking someone's pocket?

Freebooting Venus / Re: Recover, Regroup, Prepare
« on: December 05, 2015, 06:00:47 PM »
Aha! So play the rules first, then make sense of it in the fiction! If you fail the roll to regroup/recover during a month of downtime, I guess that poison really knocked you for a loop: you're tossing in bed, sweating up a storm, cursed with terrible headaches! At the end of the month, you're utterly fed up and tired and .... what do you do?

is that how it works?

Freebooting Venus / Playmat for "Fight with Someone"
« on: December 05, 2015, 05:49:03 PM »
While getting ready to run my first session tomorrow, I puzzled over how to do the reveals when everyone involved in a fight is instructed to "spend blind, without knowing how your opponent is spending theirs." Easy enough to do this with paper and pencil, of course, but even more elegant might be little playmat marked with icons for each of the three options. The top half of the playmat folds up to create a private space behind which players arrange tokens (beads, dice, coins) equal to their "spend."

Hope this proves helpful for other playtesters. The .pdf is meant to be printed out double-sided, then cut and folded as per instructions.

Apocalypse World / Real-world Inspirations for running AW
« on: December 15, 2010, 12:52:38 PM »
I came across an interesting blog post describing a district in Hong Kong where inhabitants lived outside the reach of both British and Chinese law before it was dismantled in 1993. Strikes me as a useful point of departure for running Apocalypse World.

The youtube video embedded in the blog post is a German documentary that shows life in the interior: the streets of the city are dark roofed passageways with water streaming down the walls. Very evocative.
