Dungeon World / About to start running...
« on: May 13, 2013, 05:02:24 AM »
Hey folks,

So, Ive run Apocalypse World a ton, and played Monsterhearts on the player side, and I am about to start running Dungoen World for a few gamers round where I am. Does anyone have any top tips specific to running DW? And around converting old adventures?

Thanks,

Shane

Apocalypse World / Re: Threat of violence - manip or aggro?
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:36:18 AM »
I play it like this:

Decide in advance your action if the guy says "fuck you". Do you a) back down, or b) choke the asshole to death. A = manipulation, B = aggro.

For me, manipulation is the threat of force when you are *not* commited to follow through. Aggro is when you are.

In your case, using stuff like a broken finger as concrete assurance could work for manipulation, but it still means that the character is not committed to real meaningful violence at that point, and the MC counter-moves will reflect that if you miss.

Shane

How about a custom move to do with using the environment as a weapon, maybe when you aren't armed?

The higher the temptation, the more chance of a fail result and more holdmover you. So the more tempted you are, the less likely you are to make a wise bargain.

Apocalypse World / Re: The first session
« on: April 28, 2011, 01:46:56 AM »
One question I use a lot after a player comes up with something is "who else is involved, and why?" directed to the other players. Often followed by "what's the one sticking point or source of tension?" if the link is positive. If you can tie the characters together, good or bad, then stories will unfold.

For example, we have just had our first session for our new AW game, and after the Maestro'D described his establishment (a bar, restaurant, whorehouse and cage fighting joint called the Meat Locker) I asked who else was involved. The Gunlugger went for the obvious option of working security for room and board but no other link, so wanting to avoid a status quo I asked what the tension is, and the Maestro's player put forward thatch wants the Gunlugger in the cage to fight. Now we have a generally allied relationship with a small bit of tension. This was built on in session two when the Maestro offered to transfer the contract to the slave girl the 'Lugger is in love with him in return for a month of cage fighting.

Build links between characters, player or non, and always injectna bit of tension into any relationship, and with any luck the players will start filling the gaps in for you.

Hope this was of some use.

Shane

Apocalypse World / Re: New Playbook: The Radio

Well, sure NPCs can become antennae for the Radio. But PCs? They are just too fucking cool to be completely squashed - after all, the Radio gave up something to them too, y'know. Maybe if they go with the Radio's wishes they get to mark exp, otherwise they are acting under fire?

Aside from a ton of (admittedly often cryptic after the fact) notes, I use a relationship mapper (iThoughts HD in my case) to keep track of the characters, locations and threats.

Apocalypse World / Re: "Hold X", how does exactly the mechanic work?

I interpret that just like the Read a Person move; you use them ver the course of that conversation or brain scan, and once that individual interaction is over anything you haven't used are Los if you don't ask the questions at the end.

Apocalypse World / Re: Are the characters aware of their sex moves?

I suspect the Brainer would know the significance of sex and deep questioning, for sure. The others are a little more subjective.

How about making the Canine Sacrifice roll based on Hx? If it is about loyalty, your connection with the target should make a difference?
