Monsterhearts / Clarification: String spending to offer xp.
« on: August 03, 2012, 11:14:27 AM »
Since the actual list says:

You can spend a string on a PC to:
offer them an xp to do what you want.

Does that mean that if you spend the string, make the offer, and the PC refuses, the string is gone?

That is what the phrasing seems to indicate, but I'd like to confirm it.

Apocalypse World / Re: How do you use these character traits?
« on: July 20, 2012, 01:32:37 AM »
On the quarantine archives.  It works just like the savvyhead's workspace.  So if you want to get to the bottom of something in the past it could take weeks/months of combing through the archives,  You might have to figure out something else first, (like how to transcribe a code) etc.  I mean archives are usually like records of specific things.  It's not like somebody wrote a book that said 'here's what happened," you know?

Far easier to remember shit, really, but not detailed, right?

You might consider that the Hoard has some purpose for wanting what it wants, even if that purpose doesn't make sense to us and might offer general commentary from its point of view.  At least in one game I played, it talked constantly to the hoarder, casting doubt, raising suspicion, reminding the hoarder of things.  The hoard always wanted the things in it to be arranged just so.  If I remember right, once it figured out just the right placement, it would somehow heal the world.  Or at least the hoarder thought so.

Apocalypse World / Re: A big ass name list.
« on: July 17, 2012, 08:38:13 PM »
That's awesome.

You know, my difficulty with that big name list is that it gives me too many options in the moment.  But for prep it wouldn't be bad.

Now I was screwing around with my Apples to Apples Party Box because of this post on Story Games about using the green apple cards as qualities of npcs (which is pretty cool, draw three and see if you don't get a personality.)  And I suddenly realized that red apple cards make a great source for AW names.

Now, you can't always use the whole noun on the card (a lot of them are celebrities and that would get a little too weird for me)  But you can usually pull at least one word off the card and use it for a name.  The advantage to this method is that I don't have to have the brain hiccup of picking a name, rather I can just draw the card and use what comes up.

Now making the character cards like you have done, that's above and beyond and very cool!  I could see doing that.  I don't know about hunting up that many photos, but clearly it can be done.

Apocalypse World / Scent and Voice list
« on: July 09, 2012, 11:10:48 PM »
All the descriptors on AW sheets are physical, mostly.  Visual, some textural.

These two lists are of possible voices and smells.  I'm sure there are more, this was just a little brainstorming.

Apocalypse World / A big ass name list.
« on: July 09, 2012, 11:08:15 PM »
This is a name list I've put together from a couple of different sources.  Some of them are already in the playbooks or rule book somewhere.

I'm not sure how to arrange it to be more useful (random tables or something?)  There are something like 527 names on the list, y'know, in case you're running short.

Here's the slideshow of their 'builds' including some drawings.  The thing I'm talking about is the Gasifier.

I watched a bit of The Colony from the discovery channel.  The one I liked was that they burned wood and captured the wood-gas, funneling it into the tank of something that had an alternator.  That was then used to charge a bank of batteries which provided power to the factory building they were living in.

Apocalypse World / Re: Hocus Followers/Surplus questions
« on: October 09, 2011, 10:19:41 PM »
We've had some sessions recently where the session itself has only covered a few hours of time and it looks like the next session will pick up immediatey in the timeline and it seems kind of weird for the followers to be in want then suddenly in surplus when the causes of want in the fiction have yet to be addressed.

Like I said, it just felt funny and a little hard to justify fictionally. But, you know, if that's the way it is then that's cool.

Apocalypse World / Hocus Followers/Surplus questions
« on: October 09, 2011, 05:29:10 AM »
Okay so you can get a 'personal share' of barter from your follower's surplus.  Is this persistent, like you get 2 barter which stays until you spend it or is it like the hardholder and you have 2 barter available for the duration of that session.

Some of our sessions lately have been only about a single day or two following hard on each other.  It feels unnatural to roll fortunes for such a short span of time.  Do you put it off until it seems to fit?

Apocalypse World / Hardholder hold size seperate from gang?
« on: February 24, 2011, 10:09:11 PM »
Does the size of the hold (75-150 souls) include the gang (30 mean dudes/chicks) or are they seperate i.e. I have a hold of 150 souls AND a gang of 30 guys?

Apocalypse World / Re: Extended Mediography

I haven't yet finished it, but I've been listening to the Audiobook of the The Passage, by Justin Cronin.  So far I'm finding it very good, though bleak.  Several really good ideas for AW.  It covers an Apocalypse in the early part and post in most of the rest of the book.

But here, the ephemera from the book seems like just the thing to use in a game.  Though the tone of this apocalypse is a bit different than AW.

Check out this map and the "one law" document that follows it, from Google Books
