Beneath a More Auspicious Star / Re: A Question of Scale

I believe he can "metaphorically" fortify his position against the Courtier, however the important factor is that to do so, he has to GO TO WAR on the Courtier. It doesn't have to be leading armies into battle against them, but they are enemies engaged in a protracted and violent battle against each other.

Apocalypse World / Re: Most and least popular playbooks?
« on: June 16, 2011, 02:06:26 AM »
I have never seen anyone play a Skinner. Aside from that I think I've seen all the "core" playbooks once or twice, with none of them getting way more play than others. Savvyheads might be slightly more popular than the others, now that I think about it.

Just to pimp the workspace rules again . . .
Keep in mind they're not just for building stuff, they're also for when you go into your workspace and devote time and resources to "figuring out some shit."

If he says "I want to know how to heal the environment," that's another workspace project. And, as I've mentioned, workspace projects are great story fodder.

So if you're not ready to jump in and provide a solution yet, get him to do a little research first. Collect data, talk to an expert, gather information, all that good stuff.

I'd just add something like:
and
*you're going to have to add a weather manipulation array to your workspace first;
and
*first you'll have to figure out where that black shit in the atmosphere came from.

Then you've got a few interesting projects for him to plug away at and you'll probably get some good games out of his attempts. What more do you need?

These could be made into workspace projects of their own. Like, what do I need to build a weather manipulation array?

Exactly! That's the beauty of breaking things like this up into a few workspace requirements. Well chosen requirements easily become projects themselves!

Also, if the Saavyhead has augury, he totally needs to isolate and contain a fragment of the psychic maelstrom. I think that's the coolest thing any AW move does.

Apocalypse World / Re: Types of games

I played a one on one game, sort of. We did pick up another character for a session or two, but I also played several sessions with just me and the GM.

It works fine one on one, but there's a lot more pressure on that one character. No time to take a breather. As long as you're OK with an intense back and forth between you and the GM, I think it's GREAT.

Never tried PbP, but it's worked great over IRC.

I think you're on the right track. I'd just look at the workspace rules and pick a set of tough requirements.

So you've already got:
*you're going to need (evil psychic queen) to help you with it;

That sounds like a pretty cool start to me. Is there a specific reason he'll need her help? I wouldn't really worry about how he's going to work with her, that's his problem, right? If you're feeling really nice you might try to make sure that there's a couple angles he could take to get what he wants out of her, but as long as you're being open to his ideas, just let the player come up with something cool and say it works.

I'd just add something like:
and
*you're going to have to add a weather manipulation array to your workspace first;
and
*first you'll have to figure out where that black shit in the atmosphere came from.

Then you've got a few interesting projects for him to plug away at and you'll probably get some good games out of his attempts. What more do you need?

Apocalypse World / Re: Is Fighting supposed to be Seize By Force?

Thanks, dudes!

Figurefour, I'd love to hear what you have to say, even if you're like "Vincent you're wrong you poopyhead." I mean, he just wrote the game. I'm running it. If you've got a good viewpoint I'd like to have access to it.

Actually, I think J. Walton summed up what I was going to say rather nicely.

I totally agree that seizing someone's life by force seems to suck every time I've seen it tried, but sometimes Seize by Force is still the right move to use because the situation calls for trading harm. In that case, I've often resorted to strange abstract objectives to seize, like "seizing the initiative", "seizing the upper hand" or otherwise trying to take control of the fight by slugging it out with a dude.

Well, I was going to say something, but looks like I've been beaten to it.

Cold shooting a dude who's not ready to shoot you back is Going Aggro. What you want him to do is die. (Or you can just shoot a dude, if it's all set up nicely in the fiction.)

Shooting a dude who's blasting you with an assault rifle is Sieze By Force, that's why Sieze By Force makes you take harm too.

Sometimes Balls is a dick; other times he's a lady.

Balls is always a dick, even when he's a lady.

But seriously, the "baggage" has always been sort of fun in my experience. When we notice it at all.

Apocalypse World / Re: Hang Up on the Fight Mechanics?

...when, according to the narrative, a PC is fighting against a group of NPCs that are not a small gang. The rules of the game don't tell me what to do.

Quote from: VB in AW
...when a player’s character hands you the perfect opportunity
on a golden plate, make as hard and direct a move as you
like.
...
When a player’s character makes a move and the player misses
the roll, that’s the cleanest and clearest example there is of an
opportunity on a plate.

That's the rules of the game telling you what to do.  Make the move that you think is best.  If you want a harder move, make a harder move.  If not, not.

It's also worth keeping in mind that the MC makes moves, not the NPCs. Just because there's two NPCs in the scene doesn't necessarily mean you get to take two turns. When it's time for you to talk, you still only get to make one move, right? If the NPCs are shooting a PC, you'll use the Inflict Harm move. If you think there's enough guys shooting that you feel they should be hurting more, well I guess they're big enough to be a small gang. You don't get to Inflict Harm twice in a row.

I believe in that case your players are creating PC-NPC-PC triangles for you.
Pat yourself on the back, sit back and enjoy the show.

Apocalypse World / Re: Choosing names from the list

Well, "scarcity" IS sort of a theme of Apocalypse World, and "scarcity of names" seems like an interesting concept.

I wonder if that's what my next apocalypse will be about?
