I think more examples of things would be cool, but that might go against the "make sure other players think it's cool" idea.

If you have to put a gun to the PCs heads to get them to be active, then do that

In my game, I announced some offscreen badness, which then became onscreen for some of the characters, who did nothing, so it became onscreen for the other characters, who did nothing, so they shot an NPC, and then when the PCs still didn't answer their questions they shot the hoarder in the foot.

At the same time, I don't want violence to be the answer to everything, so in the second session I mostly had some kids cough on them.  Exploring the different ways you can barf on things is fun.

I've been playing with a group of people whose closest experience with p&p is Munchkin and knowing the story about the gazebo.  I think the biggest problem is actually that their preconceptions about narrative authority are preventing them from exercising any; they don't do much until I've announced lots of badness and it starts shooting at them, or coughing blood on them, or bursting into the bar.  They are enjoying it, and at least some of them are figuring out how highlighting works (the Faceless had Weird highlighted, so he opened his brain a lot for no reason.  It was fun.)

Apocalypse World / Re: Playbook: The Coot

What's with the fourth stat line?  It looks like it's just the third stat line, but with one less Hard.

Also, the advancement options should probably be expanded, and "Get +1 Sharp (Max Sharp+2)" is useless, since the character already has Sharp+2.  If you meant to make that Max +3, it would work, but none of the other characters have both a move and an advancement option to get them to +3 in their core stat.

Also, if you take all your improvements, you'll have all the Coot moves.  Apart from the Chopper and the Hardholder, who start with all their moves, no other book can get all of its moves.  I think this is to provide variation to characters using the book so they don't all look the same after a long game.  Maybe instead of "Take eye on the door" you could make a version of eye on the door based on Sharp?  I've wanted that to exist for a while.

All that being said, I like this book a lot.  I think Sharp-based books are cool, and I can see having a lot of fun with this type of character.

the nerve core / Gencon?

I didn't see anybody running Apocalypse World at Gencon in the event list.  Even if that remains the case, will I be able to buy the game anywhere, or should I just give up and pay shipping?

We're in the first session now.  The NPC running the hold has asked us to kill the Hocus, although a monster is doing a pretty good job of it already.  One of the team members is in the cult, so this will be an area of conflict.  I'd like to see if the hocus has enough power to try to overthrow the hold, which would definitely generate some tension.  The Faceless also went on a bit of a shooting/burning spree, so we may have to help him go into hiding.

We're playing a game where the world is more jungle/forest-y, but there are giant monsters everywhere, so I guess our main scarcity is safety.  Most of the PCs are monster hunters attempting to mitigate this scarcity.

How about... Know when to fold 'em

Does the gambler playbook already exist, or is that what I'm doing this weekend?
