Title: Songs, film clips and videos portraying playbooks?
Post by: Arvid on August 04, 2013, 11:39:45 AM
On a local (swedish) roleplaying internet forum, I'm starting a series of features on the different playbooks of Apocalypse World. Short analysis of moves and crap, my take on them, what I feel they bring to the table, what I feel you need to consider when MC:ing them, and so on. I'm planning to attach one or two youtube links to songs, videos, movie clips etc to each to portray what I feel the playbook is all about.

Do you have any suggestions for good media? First up is the Hardholder and Battlebabe. For the Hardholder I got this so far:

For the Battlebabe, I'm not so sure. This, maybe?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lRVnnINJ9ZM&t=97

My second question is, how do you feel about this idea? If there's an interest I'll write the series in english and post them on this board as well.

Ah, fuck it, why wait? I'll put up the first playbook focus right away, and we'll see what comes of it!

Haha, yeah! Exactly the one I picked.

Any good ones portraying Angels? So far I'm thinking a scene with Doc Cochran from Deadwood.

Angels vids.

First Eugene Roe from Band of Brothers.
Basically the entire episode six, Bastonge works as an example of an  angel

This is the best clip I've managed to find on short notice. Bit long

Here are two brilliant ones from Angels of America.
Both are long but worth it. The second one really kicks off around the 2 minute mark.

Thanks!

Are there any clips of Savvyheads or Operators out there?

Genius! Keep 'em coming!

Operators are hard.
The only one I can think of is Tony Soprano which on the other hand is the ultimate operator imho. Though I don't know the series well enough to pick a good clip. But the intro is quite iconic.

Came up with another Savyhead that can help illustrate that the savyhead doesn't have to be a techie cooped up in a workshop

I'm thinking maybe Hannibal (A-team) for an Operator and McGyver for a Savvyhead. 80's time!

The Savvyhead link is the same as the Soprano one!

Yeah, the second line was supposed to be the Macgyver intro.  :D

Freaky example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQKkCMDaN54) of a Savvyhead from eXistenZ.

If you decide to do some of the LE playbooks, here's a shitload of Faceless:
"Do you like hurting other people?" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv-XCM8sies)
"Here's a question for you... why are you wearing that mask?" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqpZMsZBdNQ)
"Hi, it's 'Kate' from Hotline Miami's dating service. We have set up a date for you this evening. She'll be waiting for you ar Southwest 53rd Place. As usual, make sure you wear something fancy." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMOdXb3GvwM) Interestingly, this gameplay footage is not true to the final version of the game. However, the character in this footage is reused as the Pig Butcher, the star of Midnight Animal, a slasher flick in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, based very loosely on the events of the first game.
Obviously, masks are not this disposable in Apocalypse World. Fuck, Golden Age Miami was a great place for Faceless. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgXM7ivgYTo)
Footage courtesy of the Fans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKTXLwfvOTI)

Man, Hotline Miami is all about Faceless.

That's not a bad angle!

I dig Hotline Miami, finished it yesterday.

Haha, oh my god, how about this thing?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFqasQ6sX7Y

I'll take  a break after the original playbooks and return to the LE playbooks later. The Faceless is one of the easy ones to find clips of, it's a real movie trope.

Dredd (excellent movie) is about a Gunlugger being teamed up with a Brainer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJoL7Nk2FT0

Gunlugger going aggro to try and get some info but the guy sucks it up so the brainer uses casual brain receptivity.

I guess you could make the case for Judge Dredd to be a Faceless but at least in this movie he does all the Gunlugger moves (including prepared for the inevitable). I don't think his Facelessness is all that important since he never loses his helmet.

Someone else actually posted a link somewhere presenting that as an example of a Savvyhead. I can't figure out who or where. Wish I could give credit where credit is due.

I actually decided to find something to lock the mouse to the monitor so it wouldn't go over to the TV and lose focus, and finally finish Hotline Miami tonight. Is is me, or are the Biker levels really easy? I feel like I died a lot less and got much better rankings on those levels.

Have you seen the preview footage for the sequel? I understand why they chose the song Beams by the band Tape (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjwhTfPTmtI) as the theme for the teaser trailer. It really is emblematic of the tone of the game. I mean the last scene of the demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beUrlDwf56w) is intense. It seemed funny at first, but quickly became awful and sad. Not really horrifying, because it was a foregone conclusion. And then the demo cuts to a Game Over screen with Beams playing. Cactus and Dennis are masters of fuckery.

Sorry for the derail. I just fucking love h?u?r?t?i?n?g? ?o?t?h?e?r? ?p?e?o?p?l?e? Hotline Miami. At some point soon I want to make some Hotline Miami-themed supplemental masks for the Faceless. They wouldn't just be rewards; as relics of 50 Blessings, and Jacket in particular, they serve as a vehicle to introduce fuckery into the game. I want to try and build some fuckery into the masks by detailing their agendas as mentioned by the Norman move. I imagine Rasmus as having an obsession with secrets, practically hoarding them, and lashing out in a hostile, accusitory, recriminating manner at the wearer. "I don't know you! Why are you here? You're no guest of mine!"

Doesn't Rasmus represent the typical Faceless mobster you murder?

I think so. Richard is you. The woman from the end of Decadence wears the Don Juan mask.

Okay, I'm going to join the analysis once I've replayed the game.

Reviving a bit old topic, but maybe someone will take a look.
I would say that you also have Hardholder in Dredd (MaMa and her clan).

As for faceless, this one is hard to beat (from Borderlands 2):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBTqwu2d490

As for operators - well, that's a bit hard, as most of the fiction figures that are fit to be operator, also fit nicely into the hardholder. But guys from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and from Snatch should fit nicely. Actually I would say, that you can watch the Snatch, and have archetype, after archetype paraded in front of you :)
The same goes for the Boondock Saints.

The  song "Stuck in the Middle With You" from Reservoir Dogs makes me think of the operator. Heck the movie could be translated as the operator and and her crew after failing a moonlighting roll and playing out the consequences in game.

"The Sun and Moon" by Cursive makes me think of the Brainer. With lyrics like "I can see through you like a two way mirror" it's hard not to.

Ok, I just watched "Domino" for second time, and here you have perfect BattleBabe, and you can also spot Operator, and Hardholder (although you will have to watch full movie to get good feel of it - which I wholeheartedly recommend):
