Title: hold 1+1
Post by: Jason Morningstar on September 01, 2010, 02:53:33 PM
What does "on a 10+ hold 1+1" mean?

It means hold 1, and take +1forward.

It's part of the Bonefeel move in the Savvyhead playbook, see p.76 or 231.

So, hold 1 and take +1forward means you get +2 to that first roll and then +1 to every roll after that?

You spend your hold to [do x]. If your hold was 1+1, you also take +1 forward for the first roll thereafter.

It should be right there in the text of the move. There are a couple of moves where you might hold 1+1, and I made sure to write an explanation into them.

Nope, you just hold 1 per Bonefeel (you get to spend the hold to be somewhere with proper tools and knowledge) and +1 forward means "take +1 to your next roll."

Got it.  I skimmed the text while doing 3 other things.  Got it.  Thanks.

The cryptic shorthand really throws me.

The cryptic shorthand really throws me.

Once I've read it and internalized it, it really makes a lot of sense to me. "Hold x" is an established game mechanic, and always does the same thing (you have a "point" to spend to do something, as per the move), and "+X" is also an established game mechanic and always does the same thing: it's a modification to a roll. There's no + or - that doesn't have to do with a roll. So I read "Hold1+1" and see, ah, ok, I Hold 1 and get +1 to some roll. Obviously I have to look at the move to understand what the hold and the roll are, but I think the shorthand isn't overly obtuse.

- and + are sometimes mathematical operators and sometimes not. 1-armor includes an unnecessary hyphen and -1armor means subtract one. + can mean "or more" or "add" or "and".

True, but the conventions are consistent. Once you internalise what it means (which does take more than a skim), it's very precise and concise language. I actually have the opposite experience as you: when I see that stuff, I go "oh good, I know exactly what that means".

(And sometimes that "exactly what it means" includes "I now know to look up detail X in the move".)
