So my playgroup was looking at different games, and this one was recommended. I see that the rules are available on GitHub; but how do we open them in some easily readable format? I don't own Adobe Illustrator, and Scribd doesn't seem to know how to parse the files. Is there some free alternative to Adobe or some easy-to-read format available?

After some further investigation, it appears that the PDF may be in the Adventurer's Guild. But this seems to run afoul of a Catch-22; to get the PDF you have to be in the Adventurer's Guild, but to get into the Adventurer's Guild you must write a playtest report, but to write the playtest report you need... the PDF? Could someone help me out with some sort of 'how to get started' info?

In the Adventurer's Guild there's the pdf of the Beta 2.3 version of the rules. To obtain it, you had to buy the basic "red box" version of the rules, playtest it and report the actual play.
However, currently sage & adam are finalizing the game and soon enough (late July I think) the definitive pdf will be available to everyone (along with the printed book).
You can read the github files in this way: download them, change their extention from .xml to .html and open them with your browser. It's not perfect but it works.

Here's where someone has done exactly that: http://www.darkshire.net/jhkim/rpg/srd/dungeonworld/ (http://www.darkshire.net/jhkim/rpg/srd/dungeonworld/)
Here's PDF versions (unofficial conversions of the GitHub source) https://github.com/maxlambertini/DungeonWorld-ConTeXt (https://github.com/maxlambertini/DungeonWorld-ConTeXt)
Also, asking Adam or Sage seems to work.

And here you have from the latest:

Not perfect, but continuously improved.

I've just completed this morning an EPUB version of the github rules (latest version as of July 12, 2012) for easy reading on my smartphone. I haven't uploaded it anywhere but if anyone's interested, just tell me.
