Title: The Touchstone
Post by: kaiserjez on April 07, 2011, 05:59:54 AM
So, I've heard this buzz about a new official playbook called The Touchstone. Who he?

Short form: the Touchstone is the visionary of a better world. One the one hand its a BIG contrast to the rest of the playbooks in its idealism, even innocence. On the other hand, the Touchstone is based on Hard so its not necessarily nicey-nice about spreading its vision (which is what most of the Touchstone's specials revolve around). Lastly, its got a tickint time bomb of burnout built in that will eventually force a class change to something less idealistic.

Cheers! I notice it's already doing the rounds on the underground market. Lucky for me I got barter spare!

What's the intended vector of acquisition?  Where can I find this other than just trading for it?

You have to buy Apocalypse World after the 1st of April, apparently.

That's what you get for being an early adopter!

For people who have The Touchstone, or even for Vincent if he's watching, a few questions about the moves in the new playbook.

Is "Visionary" intended simply as a way of having "carrots" for other PCs?  "Do what I'd like and there's an experience tick for you!"

And, what is the intent behind "Towering Presence" not having a "7-9, 10+" distinction for a hit?

Other than that, it appears to be quite a radically different playbook and will make an interesting addition to the apocalypse...

I HOPE that towering presence has a 7-9 vs 10+ distinction! Let me go look.

Dammit! That's not the whole move! What the crap! Stand by for a revised version.

The revised version is up.

Sorry!

Glad that's cleared up, thanks for the fast response!

Any comments/responses to the "Visionary" question?

Oh sure. Just a plain old helpful carrot.

Could be an extremely manipulating carrot as well... mmmmm... carrots... surely you want a carrot... just go do that thing I need you to do...

Any chance you might share the revision for Towering Presence with those poor fools of us who do not have access to the updated version?

Also, while I'm at it...is there a reason that the last two stat lines are identical?

Whoa... if that is a typo/mistake as well, is there any chance of getting a "version number" put into the playbook so people know they're using the latest/repaired version?

Towering presence: on a 10+, take +1forward against them as well. On a miss, they do what they like, and you take -1forward against them.

Thank you kindly, good sir!

And, not to sound like an ungrateful content mongering dink, but if you do happen to correct one of the stat lines, I would similarly be very thankful if you'd let us know what the fix is, here.

(To be honest, I woulda been perfectly fine with the Touchstone as was, she's so flipping cool, so I'm thinking all this is just like refining the icing on an already delicious cake. Mmmmm, apocalypse cake.)

There's some pretty frickin cool moves in this playbook. I can see most of them getting used as "take a move from another playbook" options!

No doubt. The Touchstone is far and away my favorite now, not the least because the sex rule means you almost certainly will change classes eventually.

Hey,
I'm also interested in the Touchstone playbook - happy to trade any of the ones I have: Q, Faceless, Hoarder.

Best,

Same here!
I'd be happy to trade for the Touchstone. I've got Quarantine, Maestro D, Faceless, Hoarder and the Worm expansion for the hoarder.

Anyone who wants any of the playbooks from me can do one of two things.

First, send me a playbook expansion. Stuff like what John Walton is doing--I have his Loner and Catalyst expansions already.

Alternately, send me a custom move you've used in one of your games along with the story that goes with it. If you haven't yet played Apocalypse World, make up a custom move for one of the existing playbooks.

Post that here (I'm following this thread) along with your email address and I'll shoot you any and all of the official playbooks.

Framweard, this one is for you:

Imagine the Savvy Head and the Driver teaming up to win some crazy shit race for what's left of drinkable water, or anything they'd really need. Not to say the race is gonna be rather rough.

When you (Savvy Head) put your hands into the grease of you Driver's car, on a hit you can make it do those things you might need during the race. On a 10+, choose 1. On a 7-9, choose one and the MC holds 1. On a miss the MC holds 2.
   - here's a red buton you can push once to get +1 when acting under fire.
   - look at those sneaky blades that will give you a one time +1 when going aggro
   - the screen here will only once grant you +1 when you'll need to read the sitch.

The MC gets to spend his holds as follows, 1 for 1.
   - that cheaty fucker in front of you has just spilled somthing on the track. whatever you do next, you do it under fire.
   - the canyon is getting really narrow. Great spot for an ambush. You must seize your way through by force.
   - flat tire. The MC gets to make a hard, really hard move. Make it painful.

I'm aware that it deserves a lot of work to really be interesting. It should be attached to a countdown, for sure. I've done that quickly at work and I just noticed that it needed one.
Hope it quilifies for the Touchstone.

The premise is neat, and when you're making up custom moves on the fly for a game, you don't really have a lot of time to make sure the move is "polished" enough. I like that about AW--don't think, just write! You can always crowdsource the move if you think you'll be using it often enough to warrant revision.

I sent you a PM, hit me with your email address and I'll get you the playbook.

I'll trade you, say, Living God and Wurm, for Catalyst and Loner.

(My email ought to be public in my profile.)

This was a move my MC introduced last game, which my psycho Angel used to great effect.

When you get high with the Children of Chrome, roll +cool

on a 10+ you get +1 ongoing to Weird rolls for the rest of the scene.
on a 7-9, same, but you get -1 ongoing to everything else until you sleep
on a 6 or lower, I'll tell you what happens, and I promise you're not going to like it.

(The Children of Chrome were the followers of the Hocus, who was terrified of me but needed my med skills.  I didn't much care for them, but ended up needing every edge I could get. I started with Visions of Death and Infirmary, then picked up Healing Touch and lost, and later changed to a brainer with In-Brain puppet strings.

Basically, I summoned people to my lab, tied them down and gave them orders.  I was eventually going to set up a shack in the barrens and become a sort of norn or fate.  When the game ended, I had just transplanted a ghost and was gearing up to duel some druids.)

Hope you like it Framweard.

Cannibalism
If a player would find himself trying to do such a despicable act as this role+weird.
On 10+ you manage to satisfy your hunger without any penalties. 7-9 you manage to satisfy your hunger but the MC selects one.

- What have I done?! You will feel a shit about what you did, you should, and  therefore get - 1 ongoing until you've done a good deed to compensate for your crime agianst nature.

- It's not funny! You contaminated by something, you should not have eaten the brain you twisted fuck! Now something have reached into your brain. You get -1 cool until an angel fixes you, you try holding your shit together while something munches at your brain. Plus you take one harm.

- She was dead when I found her! Someone saw what you did, MC choose who and it can be a player or NPC.

The only playbook I have is the 'quarantine' one. Any other books would be very appreciated.

I'm a late adopter since I moved away from my old MC. So I have the Touchstone and I'm willing to trade with anyone who can help me attain The other books. In particular Maestro'D, Quarantine and Hoarder.

Please E-mail me if you're interested.
